Oldies/Classic Rock/Classic Hits.......

So somewhere along the line somebody said we can't play all of these on the same radio station..I ask why?? Lets get in Mr. Peabody's wayback machine and set the dial to 1973. Just before the dawn of Fm Rockers..At that time AM stations would be playing, Allman bros, Four Tops, Jethro Tull, Bread, Doobie Bros,Johnny Taylor, Carol King etc... at least we were at that time....so why did this all inclusive rock pie get sliced and diced into three different formats.?? curious since i believe it can all be played on the same station with intelligent rotations and placement..i can see the deep album cut format that started with FM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TOP 40... I don't think Zappa's "Weasels Rip My Flesh" was gonna make the rotation at WLAC, or other mainstream rockers of the day..so those that have worked larger sandboxes than me...what is the thinking behind the split

Delta, I was thinking about this just the other day. At one time, a programmer could start a song by Neil Diamond and end the set with Led Zeppelin. Even Jack FM might have some problems trying to flow that set together these days. Yes, no one really thought much of it back in the da./

I think any Zappa tune might get your typical WLAC listener to run for the hills. Ole Frank was an FM rock underground kind of GUY. Frank's tunes had a hard time making the transition of progressive free form stations into Album Oriented rock stations even! I like Zappa's tunes. The Guy hung out back in the day in Laurel Canyon area of LA back when it was hip and weird to do so! Ole Frank along with Captain Beefheart and others. LOL

precisely my point we..and i mean us oldsters that worked in radio back when turntables and spot masters were the norm would mix all of that stuff and make it work...now we drew the line at stuff like zappa..playing tunes for the masses..not the underground fringe..but i'm sure there was a place for that too..just not MY PLACE..lol one reason i guess all three formats have little more than 300 songs in their rotation...add them up..hey now ya got a station with almost 1000 tunes...still 3000 short of my list..but then i can play what i want on my show..and get fired..for instance first hour tomorrow night i'll play Blue Cheer, Sade,

I listen to Jim Ladd's show via Internet. Jim plays a wide range of music and makes it worth. I heard him once play "Twelve Thirty" ( a song about Laurel Canyon more or less) by the Mama's and Papas!Delta, I think You would have worked well in an Album rock format. Most of the AM top 40 Guys played Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors and so on. Just play a little deeper and You'd do well!

I read a forum once that a Program Director at one of big FM album rockers of the seventies actually preferred to hire People from top 40 backgrounds. I think He said that the old Hippie Guard Freeform jocks could be esoteric and a big pain in the ass at times since They were hesitant to play some of the mainstream rock bands of the time. I did not say this, but I read that. Most of the Top 40 people had albums by the Doobie Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and so on. Many people who post here have worked rock, classic rock, country and even Big Band. Anyway...

Oldies: "Help Me Rhonda"
Classic Rock: "All Right Now"

If you combine all their formats over the years, they've done 'em all at one time or another! 8)

They did that, too, (briefly) on Sunday nights for a while there.

There have been deep cuts classic rock stations in Nashville. Whenever there is a format change to classic rock, you will hear deep cuts for about a month. Then it's back to the same 250-300 already overplayed songs.

Yes, a good example of this was when WNRQ went to classic rock in 1998. They were playing deeper cuts than most classic rock stations. When 97.1 went from classic hits to classic rock, they sounded pretty decent for awhile! I think Mary Glen and Joe Elvis just did a great job over there. True radio pros!

I listen to WCSX HD2 from Detroit. They actually sound decent, not nearly as deep as "Deep Tracks" on satelite radio mind you (but what terrestrial radio station could?), but they sound pretty good. I also listen to KLOS FM from LA. Jim Ladd does a version of free form rock also. You'll have to stay up past midnight though for that one.

Those of You who have some love of a "deeper" type of classic rock radio, give a listen to WCSX.com and click on the HD Deep Trax option. Listen for awhile to get the feel of this station. To me the station plays deeper cuts that used to be a part of Album rock radio. It is not as though they play outrageously obscure material track after track. Much of what they do sounds like the first yea (1970)r of the legendary WKDA FM and even WKQB. They just played "Lovely To see you again" by the Moody Blues and Rain by The Beatles.

Those of you who share this love for this kind of rock radio, give a listen and tell me this could not work again on modern classic rock radio. I know I know, there I go again! 8)
