Oldies Fans.........Your Government To The Rescue

Oldies fans, rejoice! Several Democrats will introduce legislation this year to require the FCC to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine. Seems like they think radio has too many Limbaughs and Hannitys and not enough Frankens and whoevere else does liberal talk. (Guess they don't understand the radio business, right David). Just think...............this will mean that every time radio plays Madonna and Justin Timberlake they'll have to play Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. I'm lovin' it!!

I agree with your tongue in cheek, but that is as far from the subject of oldies as infant childcare or nuclear science. What gives? Why do you bring that here? It is not even music related. It relates to political talk opinion shows.

I think it's funny as hell. Things get too serious on this block somtimes.

And who makes the rules for that?....You?

Private, profit making radio stations can do just fine at deciding what their listeners want.

The fact is, there is NOTHING that that government does well. Maybe one thing. I think they print quality money. But I have never been able to think of anything else that the government does well.

You may find rules similar to what you want in Canada. All oldies stations must be AM stations in Canada. Their government thinks that is "fair". Why should mono or hi fi oldies be on stereo FM. They think it should be reserved for music with deeper fidelity. They likely joked that oldies people can not hear as well as other younger music listeners, so why "waste" valuable FM space with "junk" like oldies.

Yes, fairness.

Fairness should be fairness, regardless of the radio format. That's the point.

Actually there ought to be a fairness doctrine when it comes to music and I am serious

As people brighter and more experienced than I have said, you can not legislate taste.

Yes, fairness.

Maybe they'll even put in "AmCon" requirements too. And force stations to get government approval to change formats...after all, who's better qualified to decide what programming "deserves" to be heard than some bureaucrat, right?

Of course, in their wisdom only terrestrial radio will be subject to these new rules.

Thankfully, the Democrats are just as inept as the Republicans and I predict little will come of this.

Actually he has something here. While I don't agree with the Fairness Doctrine. bringing that back will kill talk radio. What happens when talk radio is killed...well stations will flip formats. And Oldies makes sense on AM frequencies. So the Oldies format might get new life if the Fairness Doctrine is reinstated. Not sure if that's what he meant but at least I am brigning the conversation back to a related topic.

This post reminds me of what I was saying 5 years ago, that there should be a federal law requiring every radio market to have an Adult Standards station. I wish the United States government was in a position to regulate radio formats so that every radio market would be guaranteed to have Adult Standards, Oldies, and other cherished radio formats. I wholeheartedly agree with the Canadian government requiring approval to change radio stations' formats. If the US government were like the Canadian government, we radio listeners would be protected from insensitive radio conglomerates like Clear Channel, Cox, CBS, Entercom, etc. Those insensitive radio conglomerates don't care how much we love Adult Standards or Oldies.

And who/whom will protect us from the government???

Aw, C'mon!!! I like those formats too....and I have serious concerns about media consolodation. I'll even go so far as to suggest the FCC ought to start paying more attention to what operating in the "public interest" means.

Sure, we should encourage operators who propose to serve underserved segments of the community....but not with airwave nazis.
