Oldies "Live On" in Providence

I'm a big Non-Commercial listener, and there are some good things goin on below 92.3. One great source to hear non-stop oldies, like REAL oldies, from the 50's, and 60's is WELH 88.1 They have a real neat format that runs daily from Noon, every day. Sounds like it's canned but it is well done, and the signal is decent. Wheeler School owns the station, and you hear occasional students doing news broadcasts, but the format is great, and it sizzles. Also, weekends on 89.3 there is a cool swing station on the air, may be a pirate, because it is never on during the week. They roll out the good stuff like Sinatra, Martin, Andrew Sisters etc. Both of these stations should be checked out by all. Keep up the good work 88.1, and 89.3!!!!!!!! Your biggest fan, Modman

ps.........who needs B101. Let them play Huey Lewis, and let the little guys play the good stuff!

I must say that "WICE-FM" is really a good solid sounding station. Yes, 89.3 is a pirate.... but the average listener would never notice that. "'ICE-FM" has all the trimmings of a "full-service" station with Weather Channel forecasts, vintage jingles from the original WICE we all knew and loved and more. If only the "iceman" could make a deal with WDOM to put the ICE format on 'DOM during winter and summer breaks and overnights when the PC students go bye-bye.

As for WELH, they sound good program wise. But the oldies would be even better if they turned the Stereo generator back on. And I know that 'ELH DOES have a Stereo generator in the rack. They should try it out again and do a little tweaking with the processor. A good processor will compensate for any little loss in coverage when they go back to Stereo.

Personally, I would never run any FM station in mono. Even a 10 watter. It looks a little chintzy, compared to all of those other STEREO signals out there. I have yet to turn on to 99.7 for more than 30 seconds. Any mono station just doesn't sound or look right to me (no pilot light and no separation). IMHO.

I understand why an all-news or all-talk FM would run in mono, because it can result in cleaner fringe area coverage (thereby extending effective range) and it can overcome interference better, but any station playing music should be in stereo.
