Oldies on 1330?

Success....of a sort. The mystery of the weak Spanish signal I've been hearing on 1330 before sunrise has been "unraveled". Turns out to belong to WKTA from Evanston. IL (rx WEAW). 110 watts at a distance of a whopping 39 miles! Woot-woot, what a great catch!

But the fact is, I hadn't heard them previously here during hours of darkness, I never did get a positive ID, but I had heard the words "La Maga" several times. which is part of WKTA's branding. So I'm pretty comfortable in presuming that I had WKTA. WKTA is a daytime regular here, mixing with WNTA from Rockford, IL. The battle between the two means neither is listenable. (The similar call letters are coincidence).

Congratulations. At my location WKTA, formerly WEAW, comes through the toaster :)
 
I suspect that they MAY not be on 110 watts, judging by the way they BLAST into Michigan at Night quite often. There's supposed to be null to the ENE in the Night Pattern, with just 110 watts and SIX towers.

I thought that myself. Especially in light of your earlier post on the matter. That, and the traditionally relatively quiet nature of 1330 here at night. WKTA on day power/pattern makes it just fine to my location during daytime. And so does WNTA. Overlap of two signals that I'd describe as "fair" at a location of litttle, if any, interest to either one of them.
 
That's quite a site... six AM towers and four cell phone towers, squeezed between an Interstate highway and housing developments.
 
There are several quite well protected stations on 1330 in every direction from I-294 and Dundee Rd. That's why the WEAW/WKTA licensed directional power with six towers is just 110 watts. They have a relatively low NIF, from all the other stations protecting each other, and the conductivity is relatively good. But the skywave shouldn't be booming into Michigan at Night with a null to the ENE and 110 watts. The Standard Pattern IDF should not exceed 43.02 mV/m @ 1 km at 65 degrees true in the Horizontal. Roughly the equivalent of 20.5 watts based on the international standard efficiency of 300 mV/m @ 1 km @ 1 kW, less above Horizontal.

New York does not have any Oldies station they should make WEPN Oldies on 1050.

When they were contemplating changing the call letters of 1050 when it became ESPN, it was suggested that they return to WHN. I guess it was debated, but turned down, in favor of WEPN, which is meaningless unless it became "1050 The Weapon", an all military manufacturers lobbying format. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, and the rest could all "hawk" their wares on the air. ;)

If old call letters meant anything anymore, WOV, WOW, and others should return to their rightful stations.
