Oldies On 800 AM

I was listening to the radio tonight and heard oldies music on 800 AM. I heard an Unid oldies song followed by Hot Child In The City. This was during the 10 O'clock hour. I am located in New Hampshire. I was unable to catch an ID because there was a lot of noise. It was fighting with WNNW and I think 800 in Montreal. Any clues?

That IS a mystery. I'm surprised that CKLW doesn't dominate the frequency where you are because it sure did when I lived in New Jersey.

Then again, they're directional and may not have the same signal up in New Hampshire.

According to the AM logbook, the closest oldies format is CHAB all the way from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They are directional at 10kw.

Here's their website.

Sounds like a long distance for that signal to travel but you never know.

I wonder if it was CHRC/800 in Quebec City? I, unfortunately, do not speak or understand Quebecois French as CHRC's webpage is almost 100 percent French (which is understandable as Quebec is about 90% Francophone). With 50,000 watts (most of it toward the east, however), I would think that it is possible, considering that Quebec City is only about 300 miles away from your location. Check it out.

Never been to New England but I imagine two 50Ks on the same frequency could make for some battles between CKLW and this station in certain areas.

I know it wasn't CKLW or 800 Montreal because I checked the websites and internet feeds and none of them were playing any music at that time. It could have been CHAB. If it was it would have been a very good catch but I doubt it was. It would have helped if I knew yesturday that they had an internet feed (it's not listed on the site.) then maybe I could have ID'd them.

There used to be a superpower AM on 800 in the Caribbean that I could hear in Michigan at night on a fairly regular basis. That might be another one to look into.

Is that the one from Bonaire - PJB? If so, I have heard that they are now powered way down and are also directional toward South America. If I'm not mistaken, they also carry a Spanish religious format so Nick Gilder's "Hot Child In The City" probably doesn't fit their template too well!

By the way, the plot thickens because CHRC 800 from QC has a Francophone sports format. Not oldies. Now, CJBQ from Belleville, Ontario does program music during the evening in the form of the John Tesh Show (at least until 11 pm). They're 10 kw, supposedly beamed north at night. But it's not inconceivable that you caught CJBQ, which would be a pretty good catch from NH.

I cannot picture Tesh playing "Hot Child", but nothing shocks me as to what passes for AC anymore...

Why couldn't it be just one of the flea-powered US fulltimers on 800? There sure are enough of them now.

I wouldn't dismiss it so quickly since the music in his show, like Delilah's, often is chosen by the affiliate station. It's also available in short form, so to speak, with no music at all.

I wish it was CKLW but they carry Canadian and some syndicated U.S. talk. Tesh's affiliates pick the music Tesh supplies voice tracks with no song info.

Heck, it could even be Cuba. As the frequenscy and severity of sunspots increase, signals from the south are heard more frequently and with greater strength.

Could also be a U.S. based broadcaster still operating with their daytime power/pattern.

It was definitely and oldies station and it was all english music. Before Nick Gilder there was a song from either the 50's or 60's and after that there was another oldies song which was in english. I'll have to see if I can hear it again tonight and try to catch an ID.

Heard it again tonight. I heard Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again followed by Carefree Highway by Gordon Lightfoot. Still no ID and it keeps fading in and then fading out for long periods. I can confirm its not CHAB though because I checked the internet stream. The time I recieved it was between 9:50 and 10:00 PM EST On 4/25/10.

Ya know,
I've heard this station too.
I would say its KAGH but its a Daytimer.
Could be CHAB but its goes Directional to the North At Night.
