Oldies On WAEB

T

Those RRRRs

Guest
The oldies sounded good on WAEB on The Fourth Of July. I never realized how good that station actually sounds. I'd be curious to know what kind of transmitter is used and how they have the audio processed. Some AM stations, especially certain talkers, sound really bad as far as audio is concerned, but 790 definitely sounds like it is set up for a music format because both the highs and lows in their music selections were loud and clear throughout the times that I listened.

Studies have shown that talk radio ratings diminish severly on weekends. With the absence of oldies in the area, they should drop talk on Saturday's and Sunday's and play oldies.

I know WGPA plays oldies on the weekends, but they don't do it 24/7...consequently average people don't know when to listen. Add that to the fact that the oldies they do play are for the hardcore oldies fans and collectors, but much of the music is too "off the wall" for the masses.

I think WAEB could clean up on the weekends with that format, and still maintain a solid talk radio audience during the week.

Some argue that real oldies is a tough sell, but even if it may be tough to sell it full time, it wouldn't be too hard to sell it a couple of days a week.

Thoughts?

I philosophically fail to understand why people live in the past and shut out what's happening today. Sure, you will probably say that todays music is no good. This is false. There's plenty of good new music out there. Im all for playing a whole bunch of older tunes but why not throw in something that's new. I've done this numerous times and have gotten praise for it. Case in point I've played a set with the Eagles and 10cc and then threw in a Wilco song. Or, I'll play Tammy Wynette and throw in a Lucinda Williams song. People have called me and said, "yeah, that newer song you played was good."

I played a White Stripes tune once but it was a bit on the heavy side and I wisely stopped playing it in the future. Actually, a couple albums back they had some mellow sounding Mamas and Papas like songs that I segued with the M and Ps. One of my listeners called and said it was good. So, I refuse to just play yesterdays music today. Im the rebel but Im right!

Because it doesn't sell. No one is going to put up with The Everly Brothers into Nirvana into Adam Ant into The Four Tops, etc. Period.

If it's done right they will. Everlys could easily segue into Elvis Costello.
