Oldies radio returns to Greenville, SC....2x in a week!!

Here in Greenville, SC we got the Jones Network's Oldies format on AM1070...now, FM103.3 WOLT has flipped and is playing Oldies, and I predict they'll simulcast on FM103.9 since the signal is weak in parts of Greenville (comes in the best in Spartanburg). Long live the oldies! We were left in the cold last October when Oldies 106.3 WGVC abandoned the Oldies format for Christian/Country.

103.3 sounds great, the Upstate is a market that needed oldies back on FM. They are playing some really good music. Mostly 60's and early 70's but I did hear them say "We're not afraid to play Real Oldies" and then play Ricky Nelson.

I'm happy for the folks in Greenville/Spartanburg. I've always thought it was a communist plot, the way so many markets just dropped oldies formats for things that rated MUCH lower.

Just curious though...Davidson Media's modus operandi is to operate stations on a brokerage arrangement. I believe Bill Drake already does that with 35 hours per week on this station. Did somebody do a similar arrangement for some of the station's remaining dayparts, or is Davidson going to try to operate like most of the rest of the radio world, by setting a format and selling the advertising for their profits?

Having never heard Awake with Drake, some of you who live there will have to tell us how his program meshes with the oldies format that share the station with him.

A little birdie told me that WOLT is stunting and will Go Hot AC Labor Day Weekend.

I don’t know what happened to the urban gospel format, but since its Davidson, I’d have to assume that the oldies are brokered.

Drake has a very unique broadcast. He talks about community news & issues, along with weather and traffic. He uses his last hour to talk with local politicians and community leaders. He also reads all of his commercials on the air live! I guess you could call it a very “old school” broadcast. But he’s certainly one of the last people you’ll find on the FM dial talking about the local community.

His show is no doubt a better fit though with oldies than urban gospel.

Oh yes, Drake definately is a better fit with Oldies. I don't see it working well unless they come to their senses and do a simulcast on 103.9, I live in Laurens and have trouble getting it, though I can pick up 103.9 with no issue. They're missing out on a large sea of potential listeners in west Greenville, Easley, Anderson, Travelers Rest, etc. I think an Oldies simulcast would do better (and bill more) than that Spanish format there now.

I agree with you, an oldies simulcast on 103.3 and 103.9 would do better and reach more people.

However, Davidson doesn’t program their own stations; they lease out the airtime to groups interested in programming the stations.

This is going to sound complicated, but it makes more sense for Davidson to lease 103.3 and 103.9 separately, because 103.3 (Greer) can still be marketed as a Greenville/Spartanburg station.

Then they can put 103.9 (Easley) and 910 (Spartanburg) together and also market that as Greenville/Spartanburg.

Yes, there would be a much better coverage area if they combined 103.3 and 103.9 for oldies, but then they’d be left with 910, which covers Spartanburg only and it would be harder to sell the airtime for that station by itself.

As I understand it Davidson is running the oldies format themselves and are open to brokering it out to people who want to continue with that format.

So if someone came along wanting to do something different, the oldies would be gone?

WOLT-FM 103.3 is sounding great with the good times and great oldies.
