Oldies radio returns to Orlando

Also ran this one on the Orlando board for obvious reasons. The Big 810 WEUS signed on today and they are running Scott Shannon's True Oldies format which has a nice variety of music from the 1950's thru the early 1970's. They are not in AM stereo but they are only running one channel, and you can really hear it in some of the songs. Yea, yea I know it's only day one but nonetheless a good day for oldies fans here in Orlando. I just hope they get out there and promote the heck out of the station now. There are people who want this kind of music, and they need to know that it's back again.

oh, goodie- an AM that will probably have a good amount of static over most of the market AND in mono.

The future of oldies

Hey if they go HD on AM they will have a nice clean signal in their 1 mv. Depending on their signal it might work out nicely for them - in the LONG RUN!
(The three to five year long run.)

AM oldies

There is no future in the "roots of rock & roll". Yeah, it's on-the-air but if they get an 1 share it'll be a miracle.

Oldies listener have heard their music in stereo on FM for years- I contend if they want oldies THAT bad, they will or already have gone satellite. I love Oldies but I would not choose to make the format a listening choice on AM, especially one that is a rimshot from outside the market.

Oldies

Barely. A suburban 1kw AM in mono and off the satellite. A very far cry and faint comparison to WEBG 100.3 FM.

It is better than nothing, but your right. I doubt that many people will tune in. Plus, listeners can listen to Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel online.

Most oldies fans in Orlando probably have some CDs or satellite radio to make them happy.

Most [Insert Format Here] fans in Orlando probably have CDs, downloads, etc to make them happy, but their music is still on the radio. I think the audience is dedicated enough that they will follow the oldies, but the advertisers won't.

Re: Oldies

Please show us one market in America where an FM dropped Oldies and an AM picket it up and drew even half the listeners as it's FM predecessor?

(hint: zero)

Re: Oldies

Allentown, Pa. - WKAP 1470 replaced WODE 99.9 and has done pretty well, I forget the exact numbers of WODE but I think WKAP has at times had at least half the audience.

Oldies was born on AM. Designed for AM. Most of the listeners that grew up with it heard it on AM. So I doubt anybody would mind.
______________

Chicago

WJMK dumped it. WRLL (AM 1690) went up. WRLL's signal isn't all that great. WZZN picked up True Oldies Channel in September and the ratings went up a point just about to the same level WJMK was before the flip to Jack.
______________

AM oldies

What was acceptable almost 50 years ago is no longer the standard. Following your thinking, a TV station could sign-on in black & white and that would be OK? Somebody with the choice of dial-up or broadband would stick with dial-up because it reminded them of the good ol' early days of the computing or Interet? Hardly.

It's this kind of thinking that has the Oldies format reeling these days- when technologies change, people change. And, there isn't one top 50 market in the US where AM oldies does much of anything.

The year 2006 is here- it ain't 1966 anymore.

Oldies

You should do your homework, Jeremy.

WRLL went from 31 in the summer to the 34th ranked station overall in Chicago. WZZN is around a 2 share 25-54 (ranked #20) and WJMK's were over a 3 and, in Chicago, that is a huge difference (plus, WZZN was not Oldies most of the fall book). And, everybody in the know definitely knows ABC putting Shannon's Oldies on WZZN was a temporary, stop-gap measure until ABC sells it's radio stations.
The new owners (whoever they may be) will not waste a perfectly good full market signal on a satellite Oldies format that targets people 60 an older. There is ZERO money to be made going that route.

Macon, right. We're talking about markets that have influence and impact on radio in America.

a) the previous Oldies station put nada into the format
b) WAYS is under a 3 overall and ranked #17 25-54- in MACON, GA for goodness sake
c) it's market #155- nobody is watching MACON for future trends in radio

But even if we did say, OK, we'll give you Macon. That's one. Even if there were a handful it doesn't mean diddly in the overall radio landscape. I'm one of the biggest Oldies radio fans in the country and even I would not give a pre- set to an AM station to hear that great music.

Oldies

Again, especially in smaller markets, rank is everything. In Allentown, if you're not top 5 25-54, you're not a player.

Be real. No one's gonna promote a station that's birdfed 24/7. Especially one that can't even to manage to get both channels on the air.
