WOW!!!!! Former Country Station WBRF-FM 98.1 out of Galax is now playing OLDIES!!!! Charlie Browns` Beach Music Show is now playing!!!!! The format must have just changed!! GREAT!!!!!!!

Got an email this morning from The Fat Cat. The station has not changed formats. They have simply decided to pick up a great radio show with music that is popular in the region.

Why would a station that specializes in classic country, bluegrass, and other forms of programming not found on many stations anymore would pick up a "beach music" show that caters to only a small fracture of listeners in Piedmont North Carolina?, it just doesn't make sense!

Duh. You just answered your own question!

I predict that this is only the beginning of Oldies full time on 98.1. There is a LARGE audience for a very Good Oldies station in this area. Done RIGHT with a very large playlist. More and more Oldies and shows will appear on this radio station.

It's a market which is heavily domminated by country fans.

And no one else with a strong signal is doing "real" country. Even they aren't doing it right. But I can't see them changing.

I can't believe that WBRF would drop their heritage format. I just don't think that will happen. BUT, putting Beach Music on that station is NUTS! What are they thinking? Anyone who knows anything about programming knows that's the kiss of death for your ratings! People tuning in for Country or Bluegrass will think they have the wrong station. They might start looking around and find something they like better. Don't misunderstand me . . . I think On The Beach is a great show and Charlie Brown does an awesome job with it, but not on THAT station! It's an insane move in my opinion.

Sounds like all the arm chair programmers have crawled out of the wood work. WBRF is a very community minded radio station that is branching out to sever yet another element of their audience. The Charlie Brown On The Beach Show is a three hour show that may not be blue grass or mountain music or country music but it is music that is loved by a certain segment of the audience. WBRF is a station like no other in the Triad! The management there are long tiime broadcasters and certain know thier audience and am sure they know what they are doing. I might chime in here and say that an Oldies station with the right play list and air staff would be huge on WBRF.

With all the respect in the world for WBRF, it's heritage, it's community-mindedness (which I don't doubt for a second) and to the greatness of Charlie Brown and "On The Beach", I'm just sayin' it's not a good move. Now, if WBRF really doesn't care about ratings, and they may not, then go for it! Serve the community and be as diverse as possible, maybe add a jazz program, or some alternative music, Arbitron be damned! In fact, I could REALLY respect that attitude!
