Oldies returns to St. Augustine, again!

104.5 was NEVER licensed to St. Augustine. It started life as WJNJ-FM, a (then) 3kw class A on 104.9, licensed to Atlantic Beach.

Here’s a little history relating to 104.5, channel 283 C and the current 105.5 C3. Although 104.5 was never licensed to Saint Augustine, the frequency 104.5 C was assigned as a vacant channel to Saint Augustine. It was re-assigned to Atlantic Beach when Reagan Henry of Broadcast Enterprises Network, Incorporated (BENI) acquired the original WJNJ-FM 104.9 A, paired it with WPDQ-AM 1460, and petitioned the FCC to substitute 104.9 A for 104.5 C at Atlantic Beach; Hence resulting in upgrading WJNJ-FM to a full class C FM with a call letter change to WFYV.

As result of removing the vacant 104.5 C from Saint Augustine, it was replaced with 105.5 A which later went on the air as WMKM and then WSOS. WSOS later moved to 94.1 C3 resulting in 105.5 A being deleted from Saint Augustine and re-allotted to Saint Augustine Beach as that community’s first commercial FM service. After 105.5 A began broadcast operations, it was upgraded to its current C3 status when WYKS 105.5 A Gainesville moved frequency to 105.3 A.

Thank you both for the correction - Yes, 104.5C was originally ALLOCATED to St. Augustine - and that was the beginning of the St. Augustine Shuffle... at least it would appear so...

I'd still like to know what's going on with AM 1170. According to the STA on file with the FCC, there is a dispute between the licensee and owner of the tower site (Renda)

What's the dispute?

glee radio. just some people singing remakes to popular songs from the past 40 years or so. it sucks in my oppinion.... interesting choice. is that supposed to mean something? i did hear them say a new format is coming. i caught them on a tropo last night here in altamonte.

do they have the new format on yet? or is it still "glee radio?" i think oldies could work up there. i hope if they do indeed do oldies i hope they do it right. if not oldies then it will be interesting to see what format this station takes.

Glee reminds me of the chicken rock format of the 60's & 70's> Ray Coniff where ru now?

I was there in the late 60s and Early 70s. MOR or Middle of the Road Stations played the remakes by safe Standard folks like Ray Conniff. Chicken Rock Stations were like later Hot ACs, and played the Beatles, Lovin' Spoonful, Beach Boys, Tony Orlando, Stones, Motown etc. But they didn't play Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, Jimi Hendricks or anything else to do with Woodstock, unless it was by Matthews Southern Comfort. That group, Matthews Southern Comfort, epitomized the cover songs Chicken Rock Radio played, not Ray Conniff or the Mike Curb Generation.

Yep. Heard Steve and Patti for a few minutes, then a commercial-free string of Hot AC tunes. I like it. I was a fan of WSOS in the years before Renda bought it, so it seems to be a good fit to bring that format back to listeners and potential clients that remember it. And if anything, the market has certainly grown since then!

I want to see the 30' high skybox studio they're bringing to 105 places in St. Johns County in 105 days.
