Oldies station

What are the chances that Birmingham will get another oldies station to replace 97.7 the peach? PLEASE HELP US!

You know there's like a million (OK, maybe a dozen) good oldies stations online, right? Just do what the rest of the modern world does and use your smartphone.

Seriously.

There hasn't been an oldies station down here in Darwin's waiting room (Mobile) for decades. So I listen to the various channels on AccuRadio. Fewer commercials than terrestrial radio, a much better selection of "true" oldies (and not cash-in remakes from the 80's) than Pandora, Amazon Music or iHeart Radio and the sound quality is no worse than the typical craptacular nasty compressed FM we've been used to for generations.

I'm fairly certain that oldies is gone from Birmingham for good on a commercial FM signal, although I'd love to be proved wrong.

One thing I like about AccuRadio is it allows you to blend two existing music channels together. I blended "Hey Hey We're The 60's" and "Feel Good 50's and 60's" and it's about as close to the oldies channels I remember from my youth as I've found online.

In a word. Aging Demos. The new oldies are Jet 100 Pensacola. In order to have a successful oldies format (50's 60's) you must be in a location with older demos. West Palm Beach, Tampa, Ft. Myers, Palm Springs etc.

Chances are slim to none. Oldies stations are in short supply these days, and the vast majority of them do not offer any pre-1970's music anymore. 50s' and 60s oldies are no longer played on broadcast radio, since the stations are looking for younger demos, and mostly older listeners want to hear the 50's and 60's material. Really..the only reason I see that WHPH was willing to offer an oldies format is that the station, broadcasting from Chilton county, needed a niche format that was not already available on AM/FM radio in Birmingham. I'm with tomservo...you'd be better off looking for other alternatives for an oldies format than waiting around for a broadcast station to offer it locally. I'd recommend our internet-based radio station, too, since we're in Birmingham, and we offer a similar format as the "Peach" had, with music going as far back as the late 50's up until today. Internet radio isn't looked upon as a PC-only experience anymore as it was years ago and it is fully mobile using your smartphones, even while driving. Yeah, most people prefer traditional broadcast radio because of the convenience and familiarity factors, but if other alternatives are available, why not seek out those?

Being an older demo person, it looks like I have outlived music that I like in the way that I listen. Standards were gone long ago, now 50s/60s almost extinct. 99% of my radio listening is in the car. I don't have XM Sirius and don't like listening with earphones/bluetooth. Looks like I am now exclusively talk or sports radio. Goodbye oldies, I will miss you. Either way, I do like this forum and keeping up with the industry.

Well here's an option that might be in play.

I look for the new Maplesville 880 AM move in and Calera 106.3 FM relay to become a Classic Hits station, once they officially sign on.

Good luck with seeing that 106.3 translator in Calera ever coming to fruition, much less 880 broadcasting from Maplesville. We are talking about Great South Wireless here (and whatever other names they go by these days). They have so many permits where they never build stations out and the permits expire. Other stations they own wind up having their licenses canceled for misrepresentation to the FCC (as was the case with WZNN in Maplesville). Their FM translator in Birmingham that rebroadcasts WAYE-AM (W252BE) is also in jeopardy and the license may be canceled as well. So they don't have a very good track record. The only way I ever see 880/106.3 coming on the air in Maplesville/Calera is if Great South sells the permits and someone else builds them out.

Rams/Great south/brantley doesnt own WAMI.... its owned by Christopher Johnson, who is the head of the licensee of WJPN 89.3 Jemison, he is in charge at WSMX LP 98.3, owned by the Chilton county Board of Ed and hes part owner of WSMX 100.3 Goshen, AL.

Christopher johnson bought WAMI in August 2016 from Opp Broadcasting, it was approved in March 2017... Chris filed to sell WAMI to Brantley in March 2018 and the deal was approved, but hasn't been consumated and deals don't usually take 6 months to close.

Rams/BRantley/GReat south is up to something.... i worked for an AM that they didnt own but somehow got the owner to agree to let them file to move this smallsouthern Daytimer to Nevada with multi towers.

WAMI's CP probably exists only to allow 106.3 moved. Well, it's been deleted now.. but probably their plan was to move 106.3 out of Maplesville to some other City of license.. and to do that they needed something to replace it. The CP never actually had to be built, it just needed to look like "Hey we're filing to change the 106.3 city of licensed from maplesville to something else and WAMI will replace it"

Yes, I see where the WAMI license was transferred to Reynolds, but the sale was never consummated.

However, 106.3 in Maplesville and the CP for 106.3 in Calera (W292FO) are unrelated, as WZNN's license and calls were canceled by the FCC several months ago for misrepresentation to the FCC; this info can be found on the FCC website. It was never a situation where Reynolds merely wanted to move WZNN to Calera. It is just coincidence that the CP for Calera is for 106.3, WZNN's former frequency. The FM translator for Calera is licensed to Brantley Broadcast Associates aka Reynolds.

Regardless, I doubt we will ever see those stations (880 and 106.3) materialize, especially if Reynolds is involved.

No no, I meant that WZNN, which was originally licensed to Maplesville was the station they wanted to moved somewhere else another city of license perhaps... and to do that, they needed something to replace it... so they filed for the WAMI CP.... knowing full well it never needed to be built, they just needed the grant to show "there's something to replace WZNN" .. and then move WZNN.. but now WZNN is gone, this is all moot.. I would be surprised if WAMI moves.. but considering who apparently owns it, and the guy has ties to several other stations, it would surprise me.. i do wonder what Christopher johnson's end game is.

To add more meat to this buffet of stupidity, WAMI's CP is for the same tower as WKLF in Clanton. Which is owned by Great South.

And they sold WKLF to...... Christopher johnson.....

...Who is still trying to sell WAMI AM Opp, as of this post.

Dan <><

Yes, as stated a few posts ago... contract was filed and approved about 6 months ago to sell to Reynolds, who sold WKLF to Christopher.. but the sale for WAMI hasnt ever been consumated and it shouldnt take this long
