Oldies stations from years ago

The first oldies station I heard was WHYL in PA. This was back in 1969. Since they only had a few years worth of music to draw from, they tended to include a lot of what we would now consider pop hits, such as Connie Francis, and some rock a billy that you don't hear anymore.

Dance Techno music is the current music of choice in gay bars across America.

Other than that, Porky Chedwick on WAMO in Pittsburgh was playing early 50's R&B in the late Fifties and calling it oldies. In 1972, WRGM , a daytimer in Richmond Va, had an all oldies format.

I guess I'm behind the times. What happened to Judy garland and show tunes, is is that just a joke?

I don't even know what Dance Techno music is. From the name, I'd have thought it was music for geeks.

One more thing: How does Oldies but Goodies relate to it?

I don't think they lasted too long with oldies. I have some of their surveys from the early seventies and they were a Top 40 station. I also heard that later on they played Country or C & W.

I heard it on KISN yesterday! It was part of their regular rotation on FM several years ago.

When Little Caesar and the Romans recorded the song in 1961, the line was apparently already ingrained in pop culture or it wouldn't have made any sense! I'm sure they didn't just make it up on the spot. Baby boomers grew up with phrases like "oldies but goodies", "moldy oldies", "golden oldies" and just plain "oldies"!

Whew!!! Now I'm relieved, you weren't hitting up on me.

I am happy that KISN plays some pre-1964 and especially that they play that song. Much of what I wrote was a generality, or a rule of thumb that generally applies, but there are exceptions. Perhaps the PD or Music Director of KISN likes the song.

On the last day of WCBS-FM I heard one pre-1964 song, maybe every hour. More like one every two hours. So, I don't think that most oldies stations are playing anything by The Mermaids, though I wish they all did.

Re: Oldies but Goodies

I am not sure when the record set, Oldies But Goodies came out. I think it may have been before Little Caesar's song.

Oldies and Little Caesars

This thread has me utterly confused.

What does Little Caesar's pizza have to do with gay bars and techies and oldies anyway?

Someone please explain and the thread will be complete.

What makes you think of pizza? First, Little Caesar was a gangster with a machinegun.

I Know I'm Going To Hate Myself In The Morning But...

I don't know who Bill Brown is, or was, but I know one thing for sure- his mother sure did have a lovely daughter!

Bill Brown was hired by pre-oldies WCBS-FM in 1969. He was the last jock to play the last song-Rescue Me- at 3:57PM on June 3, 2005. He was also program director for a few years in the mid-seventies and in an interview said that WCBS-FM had a 3000 song playlist (in 1975.)

You know, Dick Heatherton (WCBS afternoons 1972-1986) had even a better looking sister whose name is Joey.

Yes, WCGY was fun as oldies, and had some great jocks. "Little Walter's Time Machine" was on live Saturday nights too.

You must not have heard them as oldies for long though. I think it was by late 1983 that they changed to an AC/album rock mix.

In Boston proper, the only place you'd hear "Popsicles and Icicles" currently is on WJIB 740 AM Cambridge MA, an independently owned Adult Standards station. It's in regular rotation there.

With a good FM receiver in Boston, you may hear it on evening or weekend specialty oldies shows on WATD 95.9 FM Marshfield MA, an independent station serving the MA South Shore.

Re: WCGY And Cub Koda

No they were playing deep oldies until around late January, 1984, then they changed to shallow oldies, aka "good times and great oldies." I stopped hearing great songs, and had to listen to Happy Together and Satisfaction every day.

That was when they dropped Cub Koda too. I am thankful that he gave me six of his shows from WCGY. He was a great guy and many people miss him.
