Oldies WYAB 93.1 is now 103.9 talk radio

This morning I heard oldies on 103.9. Now its talk radio and some sports with Neil Boortz, Dr. Laura and Michael Savage. They turned off the stereo pilot. This afternoon the audio on Dr. Laura was loud and it sounded like an AM station. Acutally WJNT AM audio was much better.

Do we really need anymore news talk and sports stations? WJNT should snatch up the old 93.1 frequency and simulcast. their ratings are already down due to 97.3 supertalk one more talk stations its going to be worse for them.

WYAB seems to have moved or changed a lot. It was oldies WMGO FM Yazoo City. Then WYAB and later moved to Benton not long ago. Now Talk WYAB Flora. signal not bad in Clinton, but begins to crap out south of interstate 20

This caught me by surprise. I tuned over to 93.1 and I heard KQID Alexandria drowning out 93.1. Then, I passed by a football game on 103.9 and it was MRA and the announcers said 103.9 WYAB.

I'm guessing that ESPN Radio 1240 won't go talk after all. They were planning on airing Michael Savage, but if 103.9 already has them, then there would be no need for him to be on 1240. But with Boortz, Savage and Dr. Laura on there, it's just the same ol', same ol' on local talk radio stations.

While I didn't listen to a lot of B93, I will miss their deep library of oldies music.

They could still carry savage on WPBQ. WYAB is in Flora and only 6000 watts. It barely reaches into south Jackson even on a good radio. I'm not sure about Flowood but in Brandon WYAB is mostly static unless you have a good radio. Its only slightly better than it was on 93.1. The coverage map on Radio-locator.com looks like they moved the tower further south but not by much.

Hey all -

In response to some of the questions above:

We moved 5.044 miles south, so it wasn't a huge move, but it helped.

The coverage in south Jackson will be dramatically improved when:

(1) We go to "full power" (you're only allowed to broadcast at 1/2 power with a directional antenna until the FCC gives you the License To Cover applicatoin grant)

(2) WLEZ 103.7 FM moves to 100.1 FM (and they have a pending application to do so, but I'm not sure of its status). They give us some 1st-adjacent channel interference in some parts of Jackson, and I'm sure we probably give them some as well.

I had also heard that WBPQ would be switching to News Talk, but I'm not sure that it has happened yet... the irony being that my car radio is broken now and I can't listen even if I wanted to.

Also, we're planning on doing a 3-hour long weekend Oldies show with Dale Crews, so stay tuned for details.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions, just ask.

Thanks!

how many watts will the station be when complete? I wonder if the old 93.1 frequency will become available for another station.

I heard quite a bit of interference in the central parts of Jackson.

As of this very moment, it's still sports.

One question I'd like to ask: Why the change to talk?

Responses:

(1) WYAB will be 6kW, but you're supposed to broadcast at 1/2 power under a directional antenna (3 kW) until you get the License to Cover app granted with the FCC.

(2) Why talk? I grew up on WSB 750 AM and was glad to be able to broadcast Neal Boortz and Clark Howard here! I know you used to listen to WSB at one time, Golden Boy.

WSB? Never heard of 'em. :)

Anyhow, maybe you should broadcast the Georgia Bulldogs rather than LSU. I'm not really an LSU fan, but I am glad WYAB is carrying their games.

Didn't get to hear but a few minutes of WYAB - man that signal gets hammered by WLEZ along I-55 near the hospital (MS-25 exit).

I thought the LPFM stations had to defer to full power outlets in cases like this? I don't understand how either station can have a very viable signal in that part of Jackson with them being right next to each other. ???
