That is BS! I don't know OK that well, but I do know that there is large Indian Reservation that I-35 goes through just south of Norman in the Oklahoma City area. I-35 probably goes through fifteen miles of reservation and development and expansion of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area is blocked from going south because of the reservation.

Oklahoma has Indian-controlled land as evidenced by the casinos in areas south of Oklahoma City along I-35, but there are no reservations.

All reservations ended in 1906 just before Oklahoma became a state the following year. Check Oklahoma history.

The cities of Moore and Norman are located south of Oklahoma City, not an Indian reservation.

KOMA may play "Indian Reservation" however. Not sure about that.

I now wish I had made a photocopy of a list we had at AFN, Europe in the mid 70's.

On it were the songs that although they were in our library, we should not play them because of one reason or another.

The only song I can remember from "The List", was "The Ballad of Ira Hayes"
by Johnny Cash. (Lyrics refer to "drunken Ira Hayes...")

One song that generated some mail there during it's heyday was "My Girl Bill", by
Jim Stafford. We played it while it was on the chart, and then, when it fell off, it just sorta
"faded away", never to be heard again.

Yes, WABC pulled that song because of protests.

Another song they pulled that year was,

My Name Is Jack by Manfred Mann.

About how great life was in the house for wayward kids. I think it should be played on every station that calls itself Jack.

You're right. I should have thought of both -- KEOM 88.1 and The Mighty 1190.

Dude...part of ALL our states (except Alaska and Hawaii) was Indian Territory. It's not 'coincidence'...it's history.

The Inuits and the Hawaiians were indigenous peoples, too...but not officially Indians.

You mean indian territory but not Indian Territory.

Before 1907, what is now Oklahoma was called Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory.

Again, Indian Territory not indian territory. Indian Territory is a specific name for a specific region of what is now Oklahoma.

And I simply meant it was coincidence that I heard "Indian Reservation" and "Half Breed" on this Oklahoma station since it was not locally programmed; it was satellite programming.

I fail to see what the Inuits and the Hawaiians have to do with Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma.

And this is getting way off topic of radio and into geography.

So I will just add, when in Oklahoma, check out Charlie Tuna's old stomping grounds in the mid 60s -- KOMA -- now on FM 92.5. Tuna was on the old KOMA-AM 1520 kilocycles.

Charlie Tuna -- one of the greatest DJs of all time ... and unbelievable pre-show preparation.
 
"MR.CUSTER-Larry Verne, "KEM-O-SABEE"-Electric Indian. In the small Palm Springs, Ca. market we not only have played both of these from time to time, but "Indian Reservation" was in high rotation for about 12 years. This in a market with many Indian Casinos. No complaints. I have played "Speedy Gonzales" a few times and no one called about it. This in a heavily hispanic market. Actually the song was a monster hit in Mexico when it was a current hit. The only song we were forced to pull was "WAR" by Edwin Starr after the invasion of Iraq.

I'm surprised no one on this thread has mentioned perhaps the most "Non-Politically Correct" oldie ever recorded: "They're Coming To Take Me Away" by Napoleon The Fourteenth (or "Napoleon XIV" as it is identified on the label of the "45").

I don't find it "Non-P.C."; I just find it hilarious!!

Cáscara. Were one to visit a P2P site and were one to wish to "test" the Spanish version, it shows up on occasion. Not that I am recommending that or anything... ;-)

Two more are Ubangi Stomp by Warren Smith and Sputnik (Satellite Girl) by Jerry Engler. They both have a racial epithet, although a good rockabilly sound. They are probably too obscure to be played,anyway except perhaps on specialty shows.

Juanita Banana in Spanish was done by a group called Los Inhumanos. It was definitely a hit in the "rock and roll" days of the mid to late 60-s in Mexico.
