As most of you know NY’s heritage Fm WCBS flipped to Jack fm from oldies.
And loyal pissed off listeners were out side the station picketing. Now that’s what I call mburg P1 listeners. LOL

Anyway, the massive egos (Infinity management) actually listened and brought back WCBS FM (oldies) but as an on-line station. Can you believe it, they listened! LOL

I’ve spent some time listening to WCBS FM online and would you believe their liners say “ Take us with you on your ipod” “load up your mp3 player with WCBS FM”

And will WCBS FM sill get ratings?

Please pardon my skepticism but let's get real about Infinity or any fill in the blank mega communications company. The bottom line rules everything. The NY boards were abuzz about "oldies" returning on an internet version of CBS-FM just hours after the station flipped. I'm pretty sure this was in the plan anyway - please some fans and maybe they'll accept what you did.

While on the subject of "Oldies" - why is it that stations across the country including Jacksonville's KOOL FM now call themselves the "greatest hits of the 60s & 70s" etc and yet they are still listed as oldies stations in Arbitron, local newspaper station line-up listings etc.? To me, oldies always represented 60s and 50s with very minimal 70s. These former oldies stations are trying to compete with a more updated sound and it seems they are discounted from the get-go. I'd also think the sales folks responsible for these type stations would love to see 60s/70s as a label instead of oldies. Perhaps I'm splitting hairs here but it just doesn't seem the playing field is equal.

Because for over 10 years, Oldies was the only format on the radio that failed to update- every other format has evolved, Oldies didn't and FINALLY saw that they were going to run out of 25-54 listenership sooner than later.

Classic Rock stations play a ton of more 80s acts than 10 years ago but nobody gets upset because they're still called Classic Rock. Just because they play 60s and 70s now (and not 50s anymore) doesn't mean they aren't Oldies stations.

Is it a good idea for the radio industry to come up with a fresh format designator? Probably- CHR went CHR/Rhythmic and CHR/Pop. Oldies could be termed Oldies/60s and Oldies 70s to indicate their era lean.

Classic Rock listeners aren't as passionate about their music as us oldies fans were. The '60s/'70s format just sounds like A/C with some overplayed, really obvious '60s songs mixed in.
 
sp3eaking of oldies I was driving from Birmingham to Ocala over the weekend and heard 99.3 The Beach out of panama city and they sounded quite a bit different and quite a bit better. haven't seen any thing about them here and wondering what is up? new station at 95.1 was interesting too, allmost like oldies but softer?
