Oldies

I just thought of something, since it doesn't look like Oldies is ever coming back to Atlanta, Athens would be a perfect place for oldies.

If by 1960s music, you are probably right. The demo has aged out. Just like 1930s/1940s nostalgia and then 1950s golden oldies did before that. 1960s music is 45+ years old. That would put it as old as nostalgia in the 1980s or '50s golden oldies in the 1990s...which is when those formats died out. Sorry, boomers don't get any more of a reprieve from the march of time than the rest of us.

1970s/1980s oldies classic hits is still viable, IMO. Nothing is going to happen in the ATL, though, until the 5(!) stations fighting it out in the CHR/hot AC market start seeing some casualties.

Heck, 103.7 Chuck FM out of Gainesville is already playing classic/variety hits...although they seem to be adding more 90s/00s material and easing up on the 1970s material...probably what you didn't want to hear.

Scary that the oldest popular music on the radio is now classic rock.

if there's anywhere it can make ago is Athens because of all of the musical heritage,Dock 103.9 in Greensboro plays oldies in the mornings.

I so wish I could go back in a time machine and listen to Lake 102 again. That was such a great station in its prime. the jocks were fun and friendly and the mix was incredible. They basically played anything that was a hit between 1950 and 1980. To boot, they even covered Gwinnett County High School athletics.

All good things must come to an end. Sigh....

plus way too many songs that weren't hits. wasn't their format "hit songs by the wrong artst." or was it "flip sides and stiffs?"

Lake Lanier's 105.1 FM is playing alot of old songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I heard Left Bank's "Walk Away Renee", for example the other night. This afternoon I just heard Gladys Knight's "Neither One Of Us Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye". As far as Lake 102 was concerned. Yes, they played alot of songs that were not big hits but guess what. Those are the songs that people are wanting to hear now. For example, when I hear "Hotel California" by the Eagles it brings back no memories. You know why? Because it has been played a million times over and over just like a new hit. But if I hear a song like "Cotton Candy" by the Sylvers or "Silver Lady" by David Soul, now those songs bring back memories to a certain place in my life. That is what music is supposed to do. :) People are sick of the same old songs over and over again. Play something like Jigsaw's "Who Do You Think You Are". The Jackson 5, "Corner of The Sky". All of these were good hits but got lost due to "MARKETING". ;D

Jigsaw? Don't you mean Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods?

Corporate owners aren't interested in oldies/classic hits- the River is the best we're gonna get.
It's either streaming or satellite radio if you want to hear this format coming out of your dash in this town.

Not any more. WMUU 94.5 was sold last fall to Salem and is now "Conservative Talk 94.5."
Shame. You can sometimes get them in NE ATL when the DXing is good.

Speaking of Salem, why don't they flip one of their shoddy AM stations to oldies? I think Salem operates an Oldies station in Hawaii, so it's not too far of a reach. It would definitely pull better numbers than whatever they have on those stations now.

Re: Oldies check again ?

Davidson is one owner , Davis Brod bought the old WLKQ Lake 102.3. I beleave there two dift owners

60's Oldies are NOT totally dead.

But, one needs to be careful how you play them.

Same for the early years music, too. You see, the point of such a format is that, at least some of that music transcends the test of time. Could you be a radio station playing music "from the start of rock and roll, to the start of M-TV" and not, at least occasionally, hear "Jailhouse Rock" or "The Great Pretender"?

The fact is, you can play them and get an audience. But you have to be careful how you schedule them, so your demos don't get top heavy with aged demos, or play next to the wrong songs that makes them all sound like train wrecks.

The trick is: find the early years songs that are, truly timeless. Play them, and leave the others to specialty or syndicated shows. For the 60's, drop all the novelty crap and find the songs that are becoming timeless and play them. Play them all...sparingly. They're a "feature" and the "spice" of the format that gives a station credibility with listeners in the upper demos, and with those who are there to live the history of rock and roll. Researching your music will show you the way on this.

But, there's no doubt the "meat" of the oldies format now is the 70's and 80's and must be so. (And sorry...the 80's happened some 30 plus years ago...those songs are now "oldies". Get over it.)

80's music has gone two different and easily definable directions for mainstream audiences. It's not difficult to figure out some of the obvious oldies-centric titles.

Like the old saying goes: you can't play everything. But, you can play a sample of it and still hit the demos. If you schedule and image it all correctly.

Scott Shannon's True Oldies was a very good mix. The only problem was you had to put up with Scott Shannon 24/7. :D
