O'Loughlin Resigns from WECK

Bill O'Loughlin has resigned from his talk show on WECK Radio. He made the announcement in a Facebook posting. O'Loughlin says he will begin doing a TV show on Channel 2 following the station's 11pm news on Sunday, June 26th. He described it as "Talk Radio on TV."

Bill O'Loughlin seems to be a nice guy. I don't agree with his politics. But he was an awful talk show host. O'Loughlin was much better when he hosted a weekly talk show on WBEN years ago about something he knows about -- money. But every time I listened to him on WECK -- and admittedly, it wasn't very often -- I felt embarrassed for him. The last time I tuned in a couple of weeks ago, O'Loughlin actually did an on air demonstration of how he is able to use Google to find the answer to a question. Wow! Really, Bill? There's a web site that can do that? And he was equally amazed that he was now able to receive text messages while on the air, telling his audience that he's now available to them 24/7. It was just bad radio!

I'm not sure if they'll try to replace him. Again, I don't listen, but one of O'Loughlin's Facebook "friends" posted that the station is running Dennis Miller for now. Until now, WECK was touting how it was all local from from morning until 6:30pm.

I do think this is good for WECK. O'Loughlin didn't fit in with the younger talk show hosts -- Riter, Mendola and Griswald -- who are trying to do something with WECK. As I've said, I'm skeptical about the chances of WECK succeeding with talk radio. But it probably is a sound strategy for Riter to continue with what he's doing now and either put Griswald on from 9 to noon or hire another up and coming young announcer and see what happens.

As for Bill O'Loughlin, he'll need to step up to the plate now that he's on TV. I can't imagine Channel 2 sticking with him if his performance does not improve from what we heard on WECK.

Why would he suddenly be better just because he's on TV?

If that Ch. 2 show is about anything other than finance, it's gonna be downright laughable.

I one thing that I'll miss about this (I never really listened) was when Scott Wilson would play clips of Bill on Brad's show - and some listener made up some songs mixing Bill's on air stuff. That was really funny stuff.

They haven't done that in a little bit, though. Not sure if that had anything to do with this.

So he never did a formal farewell on the air? Who was on today in his place?

Mendola to the 9 am to noon shift?

Or how about Corey Griswold doing a couple hours of talk right after the morning show and then run Nick from say 11 am to 3 pm?

Resigned or was let go?? Either way a good move. I think we may see some other fatalities as Dick Green re-thinks the stations direction. Maybe it's time to reconsider a music format.

Should be an interesting summer.

Try as he may to compete with the big boys, Greene is a small time operator and simply cannot stand in the tall grass with the likes of Entercom.

Get Loraine O'Donnell out of Donahue's hair and let him anchor 6 to 9 a.m. solo. Put O'Donnell in the 9 to noon slot against WBEN, WGR, WBFO, WNED-AM and KB. Give both of 'em six months to find out if they can make a dent. If not, see ya. Blow it up. WECK might have one last kick at the can doing Oldies from 1955 - 1969. Let Donahue do morning drive and hire Harv Moore to do afternoon drive. 1270 WHLD is so old my 78 year old father in Newfane won't listen to it.

Lorraine from 9 am to noon would be intriguing. It's gotta be something on Riter's possibility list. Brad needs to come up with something fast to keep the "LIVE AND LOCAL" concept from 6 am to 6 pm going or else he's going to have to junk all of those sounders/promos as well.

Is there anyone doing talk on sister station WLVL that could fill three hours a day?

I'm sure they can "fill" the three hours. Putting someone in who has the ability to draw and/or hold an audience is an entirely other matter.

BTW, I was listening to Brad on Friday and he said as program manager, he has fired himself from WLVL. His show is no longer going to be simulcast on that station.....I have no idea why he decided to do that?

I also heard Brad announcing his "firing" from WLVL. Probably has to do with the fact that it doesn't sound like he has a designated producer for HIS show, meaning if HE forgets to flip a switch, WLVL goes silent instead of airing his simulcast. That has happened a few times, at least for a few minutes, since Brad shuffled the deck.

Basically, the way I see it, the morning show is better produced now because Corey Griswold is there almost every day pushing the buttons and flipping switches. Tom Schuh used to produce Brad's show but now it's kind of up in the air who is there to help assist Brad, which is why it's painful to listen to Brad tell his listening audience "and now I'm going to check and see if Lea Militello is there for Time Saver Traffic... Lea, are you there? Hello? Well, I guess not" or "Oh no, I forgot all about Lea. We never did traffic. Oh well, we'll catch up with her at the next break."

WLVL listeners will now be hearing what ???

Geez, can you say "unprofessional"?

I don't know. It looks like they have two holes to fill - BR & BO. It's hard to find programming that scinitillating. Maybe they can run a delayed playback of Lorraine.

Maybe Brad will decide to shake things up and move "Riter Radio" to the 9am to noon slot?

Why would he do that? PM drive is so much more important than the 9 til noon timeslot. The only reason he would make such a change is if he signed a name personality to host 3 to 6. And I don't think any big names would be willing to sign with a radio station that is obviously not in a position to pay big bucks.

I like Rox's idea of bringing Jim Quinn's syndicated show to Buffalo with Tom Donahue updating the news and putting Lorraine on from 9 til noon. Yeah, a syndicated show will never yield a big audience. Local always wins out. But what they have now in the morning is obviously not working too well. And touting that you have one of the legendary KB evening DJs on your airwaves is a selling point. An admitted downside is that Quinn is 35 years removed from his time in Buffalo. So, maybe just us old radio geeks will remember him. But if he's doing a good show that has gained traction in other markets, what does WECK have to lose?

Jim Quinn's show wasn't my idea. Credit (or blame) belongs to Element 9 on the "Another One Bites the Dust" thread.

I see a syndicated morning show as a sign of desperation and/or lack of money. Why has Donohue been suddenly reduced to the role of "newsman"? If Griswold is already there producing, let him be Donohue's "sidekick", and give Lorraine her own show. She can bring in her trendy theatre and blogger friends. Let's see how 3 hours of that does in the ratings. In reality, it can't do much worse, can it?

Can it? As the kids say: LOL!

It can certainly do worse. In the words of Dean Wermer: How about a "zero-point-zero"?

Yesterday's (May 29, 2011) Buffalo News had the weekly radio listings and a photo and caption for "The Bill O'Loughlin Show" on WECK 1230-AM.

Ouch!!!

Ouch?

C'mon. That stuff happens all the time in the ever-changing land of radio. Often you'll see listings not reflect a change much longer than a few days after.
