Olympics To Remain On NBC

MarcB said:
Yeah. I heard on NBC 30's 11AM Newscast yesterday that they outbid ESPN and FOX by over a billion dollars. Hey NBC how bout using that 4 Billion dollars to get some decent programming for their O&O's instead of trash like ACCESS HOLLYWOOD LIVE and THE REAL HOUSEWIVES?!

....or how about some decent Olympic coverage? Not everything revolves around "heartwarming stories of overcoming adversity."And how about some true international coverage? People may actually want to watch an event that Americans aren't participating on.

This is BAD news for anyone who was hoping for an improvement to the lackluster Olympic coverage that we've suffered for years now.

Maybe with Ebersol's exit, the Olympic coverage on NBC will be improved.

But if they stick with the "US vs. the World" reality show format, I won't be watching.

I never really liked ABC as a network, even before the dreaded days of Disney (i.e. no sports identity of their own). However, with that said, I always thought their coverage of the games, especially the 1984 games in Los Angeles, were far superior to what NBC did with the summer games in 1988.

P.S. Does this mean the bill for us Com-crap customers will rocket past the stratosphere now?

So what's the lineup going to look like? NBC, Versus then??? USA probably....with the addition of Versus I'm guessing this eliminates MSNBC and possibly CNBC from game broadcast coverage.

Why so many dislike the Olympics on NBC? Could we just wonder how FOX Sports could cover it. And if ESPN got the rights that would displace other sports on ESPN during those times. Could have see a deal between CBS Sports and Turner Sports. Like the deal they have with March Madness.

Speaking only for myself (but with opinions I've heard frequently from others):

NBC has too much talk and background fluff on the athletes (mainly American)

NBC tends to show events with American competitors.

NBC shows WAY too many commercials.

Giving consideration to channels with basic cable coverage:

News Corp: Fox, Fox Sports Net, FX, and probably Speed (now fully integrated as part of the Fox Sports family).

Disney: ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 obviously, but don't forget Lifetime and ABC Family (in the same ways NBC will likely lean on USA and Syfy.) There's no guarantee that Olympic coverage would totally bump 'regular' ESPN programming.

Also, not airing events live when they are actually within U.S.'s time zones (example: 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics).

If Fox won the rights, then we would have to live through Joe Buck, Chris Myers, and probably Curt Menefee.

And if it was ESPN/ABC...Chris Berman, Bob Ley (the two have been with ESPN just months into its life) and Stuart Scott with Erin Andrews doing the fluff pieces.

CBS/Turner getting the Olympics would've been a disaster...just like the millions of dollars NBC coughed up for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, only to see its coverage whittled down to just a few hours. If it wasn't for that boycott, those games would've been the shot in the arm NBC needed to get them out of last place!

I dunno, their newest hire Gus Johnson might get me to tune in for an event or two...

And the shameless self-promotion.

I think NBC's Olympic Coverage happens to be pretty much worst; They show most of the main events of the Olympic Games in US Prime Time, instead showing it live as it happens-in the host country's own time. Like for instance, NBC should air the Olympics from 3PM to 7PM every day while in London- In The Year 2012-it's 8PM, and all of the day's big events ends at 12 Midnight, which brings everything to Chicago, where it's 2PM to 6PM, each day. In the Year 2012.

I never paided that close attention to if its LIVE or not. Must be as I hardly watch the Olympic Games other then few of the games.

Mark Lazarus gave some further details about the NBC Sports Group plans for the Olympics:

http://www.multichannel.com/article/476496-Lazarus_NBC_Sports_Network_Changes_Will_Be_Done_Well_Not_Fast_.php

As for the London Games, Lazarus said there would be some 1,700 TV hours, with NBC, given the time difference across The Pond, continuing to feature packages of the biggest events in primetime. Lazarus reiterated that every event will be covered live -- whether via NBC Sports Network, CNBC, MSNBC and Telemundo, but not top-ranked cable network USA, which is not part of the Games' roster -- and/or on digital platforms.

NBCSN will be live all day during the London Olympics.

So USA Network is not going to be part of NBC's Olympics Gigatuplecast next year? (A reference to the forgettable "Olympics Triplecast" pay-per-view from '92.) That's interesting. Wonder if they're also planning to eliminate Bravo and SyFy from the equation.

At least we know they won't have Tiki Barber taking up space this time around.
