OMG !!! beach boys 50th anniversary tour

wow just caught the beach boys show friday....a shade under three hours with non-stop song after song ..easily over 50 cuts with a 30 minute intermission.....shorter versions of their hits..Brian was there, heard for the first time several cuts like "Kiss me baby" and stuff from their 60's shows like "ballad of ole betsy" , three from their new Cd . which beduted at number three and i believe broke the billboard record for time span , from their first chart to this one...
Orginal beach Boy David Marks who replaced Al Jardin right before they charted nationally and re-placed by Al jardin after the first two Lp's which featured david Marks. david Marks was a senior in high achool and his mother made him quit the beach boys so he could finish high school...
hadn't heard "sail on sail on", "get back", and "then he kissed her"in a long while from them. Jardin had been gone from the group since a bout 1998...Don't miss them if they are coming to your town soon...thus monday is "happy together 2012" turtles, Grass roots, Buckinghams and gary puckett.

Where to start? David Marks played on their first four albums, starting at age 13. He filled in for Carl sometimes, when on tour. Al Jardine has been there from the beginning, as best I can tell. While coming fairly close, the Billboard record is intact. For awhile, recently, there have been two different incarnations of The Beach Boys, one headed up by Mike Love and the other by Al Jardine. To my ears, David Marks is a seamless replacement for Carl Wilson and I'm pleasantly surprised at how good they still sound on the studio recording. I've been to several of their concerts over the years and had no idea they still had it in them!

In my opinion their latest LP "That's Why God Made Radio" is as good as anything they have done in a long time but has anyone heard it on mainstream radio???

where do i re-start:Yes david marks was on the first four Lp's, my memory didn't serve me well there, but,Jardine left after the 45 "Sufin'"(pre-Capitol) for dental school and didn't return to the BB till right before the 4th lp and marks was gone shortly there after.....David marks is a guitar player, quite good , doesn't sing(much)..voice of Carl wilson now done by the Ryhtmn gutarist , keyboardsist, and third guitarst/vocalist..didn't catch their names at the show, different guy for different cuts, I saw David marks as part of the Bel_airs (Mr Moto) on a tour with the Surfaris and Jan and dean ..they added al and son matt jardine around 1998 and toured as the surf all-stars..Love eventually sued them from using the name Beach Boys.

"Beach Boys Beat the Beatles for Billboard 200 Record
The California surfers splash past the Fab Four for the longest span of top 10 albums among groups in the Billboard 200's history."......

this is what the article headline read, but the headline is a little confusing at just a glance, but looks like a record was set for longevity, what do you think..??? ..good catch of the 4 lp's..and yes they still sound pretty good after all these years..

It looks like you've studied this more than I so apologies for any errors on my part. We may be talking about different records being broken. It seems like they'd gone something like 49+ years and the record belonged to someone like Frank Sinatra. I'll see if I can find it. Sorry for the confusion.

WHAT A GREAT SONG! We play it on WRSG, a noncom high school station in extreme western West Virginia.

I'd love to catch them myself. A good friend who has been a fan for years just saw them recently near Washington D.C. and he said they sounded as good as ever.

none needed...They just happen to be my favorite band of all time, and i have ingested so much of them over a span of 50 years, but I was still off on a couple of things... the billbord records are some times screwy because the grading criteria has changed so much over the years originally based on a half dozen reporting points----now it's just pure record sales..this new cd by the beachboys thirty years ago may not have debuted at #3. Lost in the story is that Glen Campbell who had played on many Beach boy recordings as a a session player, was touring with the Champs when brian had his breakdown and was asked to resume the tour in place of Brian..one of his first dates was his second hometown of Abq NM, later in the tour his "phoenix ' recording broke nationally and he had to return to LA and was replaced by Bruce Johnston , who is billed on the tour as an "original Beach boy". The record was set for groups...so the longevity record for single artists is still intact which is what you were referring to..we both had some valid points..thanks for the response..

I always heard that the guitar licks at the beginning of "Dance, Dance, Dance" belonged to Glen Campbell. Daryl Dragon(Carmen Dragon's kid)was in there somewhere too.

That could very well be Glen Campbell, I have a day by day diary of the Beach Boys, that's a good one to research, you are correct on Daryl Dragon he was a session guy or touring player not quite sure which...he mentioned in an interview the beach boys nick-named him "The Captain" because of his propensity for ship captain hats he wore... Glen is so incredibly talented, not only his rich history with Beach Boys, if you watch some of those old Shin-Dig episodes he was a regular on that show with the band and as a featured singer..I have publicity photos of Glen with the Beach Boys and The Champs (Champs he is not on their two biggest hits Tequla and Too Much Tequila, strictly a touring Champ)

I saw them in Chicago in May and they are outstanding. Still with the great harmonies.
If you have the chance to see them do it.

Isn't he better known for being "the Captain" (of Captain & Tennille fame) than for being someone's kid? I have never heard of "Carmen Dragon." (Although I have always thought that "the Dragon & Tennille" would have been a cooler name for them! 8))

Wasn't Carmen Dragon a symphony conductor in LA?

Sadly, no one listens to mainstream music radio anymore. At least the Beach Boys' audience doesn't. The Beach Boys were on several late night talk shows recently. That's how I found out about the LP.

yeah prety much this BB this fan doesn't listen to mainstream radio for sure, and the 60's sound of this Cd would make it tough to get any airplay, outside of a few plays out of curiosity.

OMG !!!! Mike Love just fired Brian Wilson, Al Jardin and David Marks via e-mail ..amazing. He has to make room to bring his kid Christian Love back in the band plus with his ego there isn't enough stage... Mike Love is a huge part of the Beach Boys, I'll give him that, but after hearing the reunited original Beach Boys in July and Mike Love's Beach Boys 3 three years ago....sorry Mike It's not even close.

My first LP when I joined the Columbia Record club (buy 10 get ten free, remember that??) back in 1963, Andy Williams .."Academy award winners" and also "Days of Wines and Roses and other TV favorites" and "Little Duece Coupe" I already had the previous three Beach Boys..Andy Wiliams and The Beach Boys my two favorites at the Time...sad week indeed....sad year actually, brutal year..

How can there be a Beach Old Men Boys reunion tour with only one Beach Old Man Boy? What's next - Mick Jagger hooking up with four unknowns and touring as the Stones for their 50th?

The reunion tour actually has 5 of the original 7 Beach Boys (If you credit Bruce Johnston as an Original, and he usually is credited as one) mike Love's Beach Boys drops down to 2. The Stones are pretty amazing with three left and Ronnie has been with them for quite a while..There other groups with just one member..that don't sound that great...but hey at our age we'll take what we can get.
