OMG - ROCK IS DEAD?

Sup? Its Kramer from the old Kramer and Twitch show from KEGL. (I'm on the beach bitches, so someone, hire me.)

I was just talking today with someone else from Dallas radio. I know this is cliche to say nowadays, but damn, and I MEAN DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN - I cannot believe there isn't a ROCK station in Dallas.

I know, business is business...yeah yeah yeah - whateva!

I walked the streets in Dallas MANY a night and I know how thriving the AOR 'scene' is in Dallas. I talked to COUNTLESS people about how the 'scene' was growing in the D! I worked at KEGL when that MOTHER had ratings. I remember one book came back and Twitch and I were #2 or #3 12+ AT NIGHT - ON A ROCK STATION. It CAN work.

I think the dick and fart and stripper and etc. should go way down. The audience is smarter than that now. I think that's what is wrong with some of the AOR's that are having problems.

I don't know, I just can't believe there's no AOR in a city this damn big and there is NOTHING that resembles a rock station. If done right, (cough - WEBN) - it will win.

And before KEGL, both Q102 & KZEW both kicked some serious ass in the ratings, not to mention, they sounded good! I miss those "Triple-Shot Weekends". Just like you mentioned WEBN/Cincinnati, WDVE in Pittsburgh is the same way... a very strong number one.

I'm actually quite shocked "The Bone" hasn't evolved their format to take over when KEGL flipped their format to Soft AC.

I'll be anxious to see what KLLI does after Stern departs to Sirius. I have a feeling they might make a change there, if the ratings start to falter.

Rock isn't dead, it's just the people who were and are in charge of the programming, just forgot how to Rock. It will be back. It just needs a "fresh" approach in the market. <P ID="signature">______________

One would think that since rock and roll is about 50 years old, someone, somewhere would figure out a way to make a station work. Like, maybe, hiring some jocks who new the music and how to mix it AND sell it? That seems to work in the clubs. I've done both, and radio is harder because there isn't instant audience reaction, but that what seperates the club and radio DJ's.
Listen to the Mighty 1190. They play a lot of rock, but sometimes seem to be all over the place. They are commercial free until Labor Day. Might be a job there for you! Good luck!

I think this is a GREAT discussion - WHY IS AOR NOT WORKING?

I can't believe this discussion hasn't been started sooner.

LOOK around...EBN, XTB,WRIF, forgot calls-but Pittsburgh, they work.

KLOL - gone. KSJO - gone. KEGL - gone. Those were legendary stations. It sucks that companies aren't having any luck with this GREAT format! There are enough men ages 18-40 that still want to hear a good rock station. I don't like to listen to Classic Rock. I just have had enough Led Zepplin and Eagles. Give me ROCK!

Give me someone talking about issues and pop culture without farts thrown in every 10 seconds. Give me creative imaging geared toward me. Give me guy stuff for prizes. Give me promotion where I go with stuff that I would buy. Get a great morning show that has balls that doesn't cross the line. Give me a morning show that you don't can after a year after I get used to them. Isn't this RADIO 101?

As I have said, I just can't believe there's no rock station in Dallas. There's not even one in NYC!!! What the Hell is going on? There are more Jack stations than there are AOR! Something's gotta give!

AND - YES - I am on the beach and it blows.

{fart sound effect.}

Kramer

Simply put. The product is not great. The talent pool for this format has pretty much tried up and the ones who call themselves talent try to come off a being hip, read a liner, say "dude" a lot and play the next cut. The next cut is also product that has a short life span. The Music over all is not great. There are very few exceptions. The audience leaves, mixes their own mp3's ,etc. and rock to what they want to hear.

CW...who are you?

KIOL in Houston, from what I understand is very generic. I haven't heard it.

I did move home for a little while. I started in radio in 1989, and I have moved around so much. It finally caught up with me and I simply needed a BREAK!

I came to Little Rock to work for an old friend of mine - he left - they canned me. So, yeah - lOOking again. Its gotten ridiculous!

The fact partially is the youth of this country have pretty much given up on corporate controlled radio. Laptops, IPODS, and mp3 players are their source for music. If we as an industry wish to succeed, we'd better start getting back into personality radio instead of being the 200 song rotten jukebox of the corporate clowns' favorates.

On a side note, I'd just like to take this opportunity to say CC can take their Sunnyshine station and blow it up their cheap corporate butts as it is the appitamy of vugar-smelling corporate slop. How dare them ruin then kill off The Eagle.

I think the problem is... in this current climate of FCC paranoia, the "rock radio attitude" of raunchy morning shows, edgy radio personalities and slightly explicit songs seems to have fallen out of favor among the corporate radio giants, who are so afraid of losing licenses that they're enacting zero tolerance policies and kissing the collective asses of Congress. Add to that their over-zealous desire to cut costs by firing established, popular DJ's in favor of syndicated no-talent dolts and voice tracking, and you get more generic, bland radio that plays the same crud every two hours.

Glad to hear from you again, Kramer. When I was working night shift at a print shop K&T got me through the evening. The Christopher Reeve bits were so wrong yet so f'in hilarious. I hope you land a good gig soon.
