Now TV (channel 66, cable 10) is becomin' OMNI-TV this fall, and is comin' to Vancity. And, KVOS-TV is Vancouver's only local channel on the UHF block on cable.

KVOS is a VHF channel -- channel 12. Maybe you're referring to the fact that KVOS has a higher cable slot than 13 (which, technically speaking, is not exactly UHF)?

Further, KVOS is NOT a Vancouver station at all. It's a Bellingham one in the Seattle market.

They're just chasing the Loonies, that's all.

In Toronto, Toronto 1 (soon to be Sun TV) & OMNI2 are on the UHF block on Rogers Cable. In Montreal, Videotron carries CH (not CHCH-TV, CJNT-TV) on channel 14.
Edited by PassDutch on 08/27/05 07:28 PM.

K VOS, not something starting with a C, was the first real clue.

KVOS-12 (Was: Re: OMNI-TV Comin' To BC...)

Bellingham, Washington is much closer to Vancouver than to Seattle.

I presume that students at Bellingham's Western Washington University go to Vancouver when they want to spend free time in a "big city".

And I'd suspect that the Vancouver Canucks have at least a few season-ticket holders in Bellingham (and especially, it's northern suburbs that are even closer to the border!).

If KVOS-12 really wanted to be a "Vancouver" station, they should change their call letters to a combination that begins with "KC". That way, they could drop the "K" in their branding and just call themselves "C (last two letters of call letters)-12".

Wasn't KVOS originally a multi-network (ABC/CBS/NBC) affiliate that eventually became a primary CBS affiliate for many years before becoming an independent??

Yet the Comcast system in Bellingham only offers CBUT from Vancouver (last time I checked). Everything else is antenna-only.

Doesn't work that way -- per international standards, Canadian calls must begin with CB (for CBC channels), CF, CH, CI, CJ, CK and VO (for Newfoundland stations that signed on prior to 1949).

Also, channel 12 is an American allocation -- the only way the station can actually move to the Canadian side is if the FCC, the CRTC and Industry Canada intervene.

Don't know about multi-network, but it was a CBS affiliate through the mid-1980s. However, due to Vancouver (at least, by the 1970s), KVOS only cleared CBS's daytime line-ups -- they didn't carry any prime-time shows. KVOS was probably the only American network affiliate to pre-empt all of prime-time regularly.

I thought Comcast Bellingham also offers CIVT (CTV) CH 32.

When I was in Bellingham I can recieve all of Vancouver TV station execpt for CBUT 2 because my casio pocket tv doesn't recieved CH.2-6 very well.

A bit of history here. Channel 12 was originally allocated to Chilliwack, BC. Rogan Jones, the founder of KVOS-TV, managed to get the channel switched over to Bellingham and the rest is history.

KVOS carried certain CBS prime time shows until the mid-80s when changes in Canadian cable rules forced the station to drop CBS programming off prime time and later daytime, lest they lose their cushy spot on Lower Mainland cable.

KVOS has the same problem stateside since Seattle's 400-lb gorillas have basically drawn a line in the sand regarding syndicated programming (the ol' Syndex rule).

I was NOT suggesting that KVOS be moved over the border.

What I was suggesting is that KVOS could stay in Bellingham, but change their call letters to a combination beginning with "KC", so they could brand themselves as "C--(last two call letters)-12" and thus, appear to be a "Canadian" station.

For example, if KVOS legally changed their call letters to KCVN-TV, they could brand themselves as "CVN-12", suggesting that they were a Canadian station when in fact, their studios and transmitter were still in the U.S.A.

Sorry for the confusion.

I live in Bellingham. I can pick up all of the Vancouver stations over the air on my poocket TV. CBUT comes in well at my house. CIVT-CTV is available on Comcast channel 21. I did read somewhere that the KVOS call letters were originally from an AM station in Seattle. The AM station was purchased by someone who moved it to Bellingham. Later it became the TV station call letters.I don't know if the AM station ever used the call letters once the TV station came on the air in the 1950's.I assume that the call letters stood for "Voice of Seattle".
