Omnia 6 EX Presets

I

Would anyone have a good sounding preset they would like to share for Omni 6 EX? I have owned this box for one year and still can not find the right sound for my station. I would like a major market sound. I have many Clear Channel stations in the area and they are always louder no matter what I do. Basic set-up, soundcard into board into Aphex 320 into Omnia 6 no STL. Format is Classic Hits (60's,70's and 80's). Tried Omnia support and the CG presets.

You can try this one, but you'll have to push it as it probably won't be loud enough for you.

Btw, you should check your modulation, the modulation of the competing stations, if you have overshoots in the STL and stuff like that, before you blame the lack of on-air loudness on the processor...

What advice did our Support Group offer you? There's a lot of Omnia.6 units still on-air in all major markets, and sounding...major market.

Four points to consider. First, many Clear Channel stations use excessive modulation. I would check the actual modulation of the other stations. Second, many Clear Channel stations have (or had) an external composite clipper, that to many, outperformed most on-board clippers. The major marked density of many of those stations was created in the C4 clipper. Third, what is the purpose of the Aphex 320 if there is no STL being used? Dueling wideband leveling may hamper the action of the multiband AGC and limiters in the Omnia 6. Finally, what is the condition or capability of the exciter the Omnia 6 is feeding? Are you using the composite or AES output of the Omnia 6?

Modulation levels being equal, there is no reason your Omnia 6 would not be as loud as any other box out there. You may want to consider having the entire audio and RF system evaluated by a consultant or competent engineer. The Omnia 6 is still on many, and I mean many, major market FM stations.

Ted was very helpfull. He made some changes but we never sound as good as the other stations in the area and I know they also use Omnia 6. Studio is located with the transmitter so we don't have to worry about a STL.

Lose the Compellor! If there's no STL, there's no reason for it.

What type of "loud" are you looking for? Punchy? In your face wall of sound? Illusion of open and dynamic but still loud? Clean and loud (it CAN be done)?

With no STL, you should be able to blow the doors off.

CHR complained of grunginess. Omnia 6, with composite clipper at transmitter. Bypassed composite clipper and Presto! No more grunginess.

The Omnia 6 will sound fine without the add-on boxes--beware, as mentioned, of trying to match loudness with a "deviant" competitor. (As in over-deviating, e.g. 115% modulation.)

Side note: We got the levels back to where they should be without the clipper, & a few days later golden ears was in the car with me. Competitor and this station running the same song. While there was a minor difference in loudness, the difference was not enough to justify the "over-mudulation."

Also, CHR is a format with a wide variation in source quality--some cuts sound real clean, some are cluttered up with distorted synthesizer effects, or are just plain clipped in the mastering process.

Indeed!

Again, recheck your modulation with the proper modulation analyzer/receiver and the modulation of the other stations in the market. I would also try bypassing the Compellor - in my experience, the 6 sounds best with the built in wide band AGC (short of, perhaps, the Ariane).
