Omnia 6 FM EX

Just purchased a Omnia 6 EX. Can anyone suggest a good starting preset for a all 80's station? Talked with Mark and Ted at Telos and I still can not get this box to sound right. The audio sounds harsh so I backed down the clipper some better but now we are not loud like the other CC stations in the area. And ideas?

Cornelius has several presets that you may like. http://omniaaudio.com/presets/6ex One is called Mighty 80's. His regular CHR is nice and punchy, but also loud. CG Smooth is probably the cleanest preset you will find for the Omnia 6. Give that one a drive as well. One overlooked preset is the Cosmic. Mark from Omnia worked on that one for a few years. It started as the Tsunami cold or warm, but was later renamed Cosmic. I have a group of active rock stations running it. To make it work right you need to raise the master drive in the main input section to +6. I run the clipper a few notches ahead to -2.0, and I turn down the composite clipper to 0.2.

Whatever preset you use, I suggest dialing the Phat Bass to zero or very near zero. Creates what I call a 'bass stumbles all over itself' sound. The CHR preset with that minor change sounds pretty nice.

When the station went from CHR where it was running someone's special settings to sports-talk I ended up using the CHR preset with the Phat Bass OFF & ditto on the clippers dialed back. Forget the other minor tweaks but it doesn't "pump" the crowd noise durring ball games to distraction.

Just do what fm-engineer proposes...cosmic is the best starting point for a plethora of formats. If you get stuck, call mark or cornelius.

FYI...

Was working with him...the big issue here is he liked the overall sound of the Omnia. One's mighty 80's preset (4 band version). The Omnia6 version is much brighter sounding than the One because of the two extra bands in the limiter. He didn't care for this brightness.

I created a "Mighty80s2" preset for him to try that has a sonic signature closer to the Omnia. One version. Main difference is that due to the two extra bands, the high end on the new Omnia6 version has more detail as one limiter isn't being driven really hard by everything in the audio spectrum above 4 kHz - which happens in the Omnia. One 4 band version of the preset.

Mighty 80's preset on the new five band limiter version of the Omnia. One is also pretty bright sounding. When I have a slow day in the lab, and need a break working on Omnia.11 development, I may fire that up, and tweak a version of Mighty 80's for the Omnia. One five band.

That 5th limiter band has made a huge difference in the One. I was almost ready to send it back because I didn't like the highs (of course, I got way spoiled by having the 11) and then the new firmware came out with band 5. Now it sounds better than the 5exi that was on another station.

FWIW, here's the preset I've created for Omnia 6 EX:

It has a distinctive bass sound that took me quite some time to achieve (btw, if you change any of the parameters, you will probably lose its magic). Dynamically, it has more alive or should I say “organic” sound, compared to the factory presets that keep things more in check. Whether you like that or not, is of course a matter of subjective preferences ;)

Goran,

Does this work with the EX-i also?
