In this afternoon came a demo 9 for us to play with. Since it's a demo, I resisted the urge to pop the lid off anf inspect. But, using a light I looked in the side ports. Don't agreee with the gentleman who didn't like the wires... Superficially it looks like a rugged computer. Connections I can see are tight, I've no reason to think the unseen ones are otherwise. My experience has been, once I button the computer up, cable failure is a non-issue unless or until I take the top off again.
Feature - rich box, I'm looking forward to how it does on the air.
 
Put one on back in March... it seriously kicks some backsides of the other stations in the market. And this is in the NJ burbs with NYC signals in the mix.

What format (if you can say) is it going on?

Unfortunately, that ain't saying much - NYC audio has gone downhill lately...WQXR, KTU, and BLS are the only stations with decent audio these days.

The 9 is a great sounding box - I hope Leif can port some of the features in that box to the next version of Breakaway. I would like the ability to tinker more under the hood than just the 3 (drive, speed, range) controls and presets.
 
Mungo merely pawn in great game of radio. If it is successful, I suspect many signals will migrate to it. Right now, we're playing. So I've no good feel for what format it might hit first.

At the risk of wrath, I've been into and out of New Yark superficially for the last 30 years. Nothing there ever sounded outstanding to me, although there seemed to be a hell of a premium on loud. Last trip was two years ago October to Joisey for the big dog show there. No one sounded very good then either. None has ever approached the quality of WKLS in Atlanta in its heyday, nor WAAF (CRANK IT UP!) in Woostah in the 80s. The Bushman and 'Don' Bordunaro respectively being responsible for them at the time.

I agree. A lot of it is loud, but that's it. With the 9, the station is louder, but has more punch and dynamics. That's due to the ability to run 135% L/R packed into a 100% composite signal. When I had it on the bench at home, it was fun to watch the Belar L/R meters slap off the ends at 133% and bounce all around, yet the composite meter just sat there at 100% almost looking like a sine wave.

WRKS had great audio when it was R&B. Z-100 was awesome back in the Frank Foti/David Reaves days. 105.1 when it was WSNR had some of the best, cleanest audio.

WAAF sounds like crap these days, I was just passing by their tower earlier today.

I drove through NYC a couple or three years ago and one station really sounded great to me...WCBS FM 101.1. I thought I was listening to Breakaway Broadcast Processor on a 'real' station...it sounded THAT good to me.

Can you divulge what station it is on? I live in Central Jersey and would love to hear how one sounds on the air.

Yeah, I don't think it's been done any favors over the years. The incredible - to me anyway - part of it was it was running off an FM 10 I believe K which was running over the radio's certificated maximum power, and doing it at the top of the band. Dom hadda get the FCC to approve the power level after a LOT of measurements.
