Omnia One

Hi Guys. I'm new to this board and have been looking for a good broadcast forum for a while. Looks like I found a good one! I am presently a contract engineer for a small market AM/FM combo. I've been doing commericial radio work since 1995 and have been in the communications field for 32 years. 3 more years of my "day" job and I can retire and spend more time in broadcast. CAN'T WAIT!!!

Anyhow, I just had the station order an Omnia One to replace their aged Orban Optimod 8100A. The 8100 is still working and doesn't sound all that bad but I feel it is on borrowed time (the 19 khz oscillator reading is bad on the front panel meter).
What can I expect out of the Omnia compared to the 8100? Their format is country. Does anyone have any suggestions for favorite settings?

Thanks!

Rick Morgan

If the Country preset isn't giving you the sound you want try the Cosmic preset.

At first I thought the Cosmic preset was an 'over the top' preset, but after looking at how the MB ACG is tweaked and how the limiters are tuned, this is one well thought out preset by Omnia. In your case, if you are mixing Hot Country with older country selections the Cosmic preset will probably give you some great consistency. Watch the meters on the remote software and how the MB ACG and limiters react to cut to cut. I'm using one on a college station which plays a variety of music from Elvis to Nickelback and the Cosmic preset provides great consistency across the board. One last thing on the Cosmic preset, make sure that you have enough drive to the WB AGC; it will help keep everything consistent.

On weekends we have block programming of both classical and jazz/big band, the Omnia One does a great job with the Classical preset. The only feature I wish the Omnia One had is day-parting. I usually use my VPN client to remote access the processor on the weekend and switch presets.

I've been very impressed with the Omnia One and think you'll be happy with the purchase. We've used Omnia Tech support in the past and they've been very good with helping us get the sound we need.

If you like the peculiarities and the character of the Orban sound, my guess is you won't like Omnia much. It sounds and works differently. OTOH, it might be the sound you actually find to like...

You should have demoed Omnia. One against the other processors within the same budget (especially DSPX), before making a final decision. That's the only way to be sure you made the right choice for your station.

Gotta love the shill. From your rants, you have not even tested this box, but yet again, mr-know-it-all will run his mouth.

Because my extra time is very limited right now, I don't really have the option to demo anything. The station is on a VERY tight budget, and the rumors are that it is being sold. Right now they cannot afford to be off the air and they have no backup processor/stereo generator. The loss of output of the 19 khz oscillator has me nervous.
I really must rely on what I've read about the Omnia One. I have had experience with the Orban 2200 a few years back and that seemed to sound pretty good for a two band digital processor once I tweaked it a bit. The preset with a little twisting on the more/less wheel seemed to work pretty good. I'm hoping that the Omnia with it's four band processing will at least sound as good as the old Optimod!

Thanks for the responses!

box will perform very well, much cleaner and more clarity than the 8100a.you may have to experiment with some presets, that's all..Omnia will bend over backwards to help if necessary.HELL WITH COUNTRY your listeners will be sitting in trucks, drinking bud lite.they will never notice..ha sorry bout that.have fun...Dsp-x is a good box, too, but i think the omnia has em beat on price, unless the x is at 2500.00 street price now.looks like Omnia has won back the best bang for the buck claim...

Not sure about that, BW really have great sales from time to time with their reseller here in the Netherlands. They had a great deal in December where the Xtreme was going for about €5200 IIRC and the rest of their range at great discount too. But remains to be said that Omnia has a great counterstrike with the One.

maybe scott can hop on board and give the his best price on the dsp-x and what day the new update will be ready.might help move a few against the omnia one I have stations running the x and xtra with great results.so chime in scott..what will it be ONE OR X..

Great deals usually mean the product isn't selling. Seems those guys are always having a fire sale. I talked to a dealer who sells both units, and they claim Omnia. One sells more units at a minimum of 2x compared to BW.

Just found out from the GM that our supplier (BSW) is out of stock of the FM Ones. They must be selling well. They have a Multicast one in stock that supposedly can be upgraded to an FM One with a software change. I believe that the boxes are identical but my gut feeling is to wait until the FM Ones are back in stock. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

check with other suppliers.omnia can provide those.Broadcasters general store in ocala fl may have one phone number 352 622 7700 good folks...

The ONE usually comes with the FM and Multicast software installed. You just have to flash the box to change it to one or the other... unless units with just the Multicast are being shipped.

Zeke, I am an Omnia ONE supporter (I have one) and it may take a bit getting used to for an 8100 Orban user... it is a different approach and sounds alot different than a 28 year old design.

As for BW, those boxes have their own merit and I think they sound good. The ONE is a better box than the DSP-X (I own a ONE, the DSP-X and an 8100 among others right now) because I think the gain section is more stable when driven agressive and the clipper cleaner; but for the last 4 years, the DSP-X was the best entry level box and is still an awesome sounding box if you know how to set it up the right way.

I have slaved many hours over the DSP-X and the Omnia ONE and I think I can make this judgement call in a fair way.

wgli...

I accept your reply. Reason being is that YOU took the time to work with each product. Goran has not, yet he has a know-it-all response. Might be time for him to ground his ego.

Thanks everyone! I have emailed Omnia tech support with my questions. I'll let you know what their response is. I also emailed the GM and gave him the info for Broadcasters General Store. The station has delt with BSW for a long time but I'm sure they would be willing to work with someone else if the price is right!

Thanks again for all the help

tjm_pro: Thanks for the links for the software download. For some reason I couldn't find the FM software on their site, just the multicast. So it is my understanding that the actual boxes are identical? In other words all Omnia Ones have an integrated stereo generator? Thats kind of what I am getting from what I've read.

Thanks!

Yes, all of the boxes are identical.
