OMNITRONIX REPAIR OPTION NEEDED

I saw a similiar post that is now a couple of years old. I am hoping a new post might come up with something. I think there are more than a couple of stations out there which have a failed omnitronix transmiter. Mine is a 1kw unit which bit the dust during a lightning storm. I have seen other failures like mine where the power amps are working fine but the exciter has taken a dump and the exciter has lost it ability to control the power output. Once the unit is fired up it goes full tilt and the 1kw unit puts out 2.5 kw with non distorted modulation for a minute of so till the thermal failsafe shuts it all down. This indicates the problem is in the exciter board and is probabaly cost effective to fix. But nobody I know wants to take a look. We have the books on this box but I no longer have the bench setup or time to fix it. We took a settlement from the insurance comany and they let us keep the dud. So it makes sense to have the board fixed and keep this as a back up stand by. Of course as we all know Omnitronix closed shop along with parent LPB and left us all in the cold. And yes we all regret now not going with a long established company in the first place but we all shared in the feeling that we were getting a bargain at the time. Our replacement is a Nautel... lesson learned... So with all that being said don't we have one good tech who wants to make a few bucks putting Omnitronix units back in service?. From what i can see other than the heat sinks and torroids most of the parts appear to be off the shelf.

If you have a schematic, look for/at any/all devices with semiconductors. Very likely a voltage or current regulator
or a reference zener has been wiped. Good schematics also give test point voltages or define
power bus voltage levels.
I'd look for something that would be (ought to be) loading down the inputs to achieve control.
It sounds like that part of the circuit is no longer able to "drag down the input signal" in order to regulate the output.
I'd expect it probably isn't too clean on spurs anymore either.

Mike Patton in Baton Rouge has done some repair on Omnitronix transmitters recently. You can get in touch with him at www(dot)michaelpatton(dot)com

These transmitters are dogs to fix. When they work they are a good box.
I still maintain an LPB omni 2500. That had a meltdown last week.
It's currently running on 3 of the 4 modules slot3 is showing a fault. I think it's a bad inverter chip on the frame board.have not gotten back to the site yet since its over. 2 hour drive.
The problem may be a simple fix usually what your describing is an open pc land on the back plate.
Question I have is if it's a 1kw box why do you push it to 2.5kw? My 2.5kw box just makes under 3kw max. Just does not make sense.

Ralph, I may be misunderstanding WGTO, but I get the impression he's not intentionally driving the 1kw box to 2.5kw... rather, if you turn it on, it is going all the way to 11 (if you'll pardon the Spinal Tap reference) and then, unsurprisingly, overheating and shutting down.

It's bit like turning on a water faucet a little and getting the force of a fire hose... it's over-eager to perform! :)

The Omni box is sitting in a corner. I will probably probably send the bad card to Mike and see what he can do. we are installing a Nautel 3 k watt unit in anticipation of a 2.5 kw CP so we are done with omnitronix! Right now we have a Nautel Jazz1000 on loan. Nice box

You'll love the Nautel. Customer service is top notch, support is among the very best, and the rig is boringly reliable. A great company to buy a transmitter from. They support every rig they ever built too.

I have a 10 kw for sale and know guys whom have parts and work on these Michel Patton is one, Bauer trans is anouther our trans lost the 3 phase pri of the transformer but we didnt have a delta ac service we were on a Y .....................Allen

We do indeed service and retune these units, at all power levels. Right now I have a 1 KW and a 10 KW in stock for sale, to be tuned and tested on your frequency.

Let me know if we can help.
