On air changes at Mega?

Looks like Ruben is no longer with Mega 104.3, his bio, name and picture has been removed from their website. Was listening the past few days and heard someone new in the afternoons. Wonder if Eva might pick up Ruben for a local on air shift, since most of their on air line up is voice-tracked except for middays with Melissa Sharpe and evenings with Night Grooves with Melissa "The Midnight Mamacita".

With KYOT at a 2.8 on a full signal and KAJM historically in the 1's and at a 1.2 in the most recent period you have to wonder if there is room for a rhythmic oldies station in Phoenix, let alone two.

I really don't think Eva is going to fail. Just give it time. But then again, who knows?

I set Eva in my mothers car many months ago. Ever since, its been there every time I checked. I remember she used to always be hooked on 99.9, and was since... well, JJ was the owner and the KING of beepers! I still remember back when "i love you always forever" by Donna Lewis was a new 99.9 and Power 92 hit. It was since those days my mother was hooked on 99.9. That all changed ever since I put 95.5 in there.

By the way, most people that know me know that I'm the "Preset King". Every car I go into from Phoenix to LA, I reset some presets in it to other (new) stations that I believe that person would  most likely enjoy so people could discover new stations. 96% of the time, my guesses on what people would love are DEAD ON! My best friend hates when I change his stations, but has to admit that he ends up keeping and listening to those same stations he complains about and can't deny that he would never find them on his own. The only person I ever 'pissed off' was my best friend's wife, when I replaced 100.3 KQMR and 97.5 KMVA with 101.5! She claims that it "took forever" for her to find 100.3 in the first place! The noon mix on 100.3 is hot, by the way...

I apologize that so far, none of this has been Mega related, but.. at least you all get a brief summary of what folks are preseting and loving, even if ppm isn't always reflecting it.

Anyway, speaking of Mega, I think it's a good move for Eva to take certain Mega employees - if that's what they're planning on doing. All they need are more good on-air hosts and certain mixers from Mega and elsewhere and they'll pretty much be set. Not sure if adding freestyle to their playlist will hurt or not, but they should at least have some good mixshows that includes stuff they don't normally play. They should manage to deliver some hot mixshows for their format style. Night Grooves sounds pretty alright, too. Still not sure why the name "Eva" was chosen. Even a letter (like B95.5) would've been ok. What about Y95 for kYot?

I'm beginning to think 104.3 should eventually be flipped. Not sure how popular Art Laboe is, but if necessary, Eva could use it once a week... perhaps Sundays. 104.3 could become smooth jazz.

I wonder if Eva is planning on adding any mixshows? They did have some specialty mixshow with Chino a few weeks ago and i remember last summer they had that IndepenDance Weekend with lots of classic Dance music from the 80's and 90's! Would be great if they did something like that again! I wouldn't be surprised if they bring over the Art Laboe show over to Eva on Sunday nights since he's on their sister station in LA KHHT, Hot 92.3.

I just feel irritated looking at this thread. (JMO), but I just do not see the value in both of these stations now. While it may be great for some common listeners to hear the same songs over and over and over again, I see absolutely no value in EVA (can't stand that name either). Furthermore, I find no value in Mega anymore as I feel they have sacrificed themselves to compete with EVA, which boggles my mind. The idea of EVA doing mixshows...what does that mean? Playing "You Spin Me Round", "Lookout Weekend", and more of the most common C&C Music Factory songs? Don't we already hear these on the Peak?

I occasionally listen to the aircheck of the Labor Day Weekend that KKFR did back in the mid-90's and think about ALL of those songs that just don't get any airplay and wonder what KMVA could have been.

I'm not speculating, I'm actually Armchair Quarterbacking. I'm saying that 104.3 should be flipped, as in they should flip it. Not that I think it's gong to happen. ...and if they do flip, then Art Laboe could go to Eva, if necessary.

Everything else, though, is speculation mixed with Passive Aggressive Armchair Quarterbacking.

Welcome to Phoenix, the land of duplicate formats :)

Country
102.5, 107.9

Rhythmic Oldies
95.5, 104.3

Rhythmic Contemporary
98.3, 101.1 (1/2 days), 101.5

CHR
97.9, 104.7

Adult Hits
98.7, 103.9

I find 101.1, 101.5, and 98.3 to be completely different from each other. Not as different as 97.9 and 104.7, but different enough. I agree that sometimes 101.1 and 98.3 can sound pretty similar.

I'd say the most similar formats are:

95.1 and 100.3
_____________

97.5, 104.7, and 101.5
_____________

95.5 and 104.3
_____________

I haven't listened to any of the classic rock stations enough to judge them.
_____________

96.9 is to 98.7 what 98.3 is to 101.5.
_____________

99.9 still manages to remain rather unique when compared to other stations.

In my opinion, I like Megas, Mega record collection. OK, Mega usually has been around a share of 1.5 - 2.5, but Eva has taken a nose dive and have fallen in the rating every month since their inception. They are new and people are currious, but their music selection and repetiveness is terrible. I'd rather see Eva and the beegees go! lol ::)

I must agree - Mega's playlist is better. But Eva sounds cleaner and clearer. However, expecting or wishing for Eva to get slick & slight with Mega and adopt Mega's entire playlist style would be as unrealistic as a Hopeless Romantic searching for love in a hopeless place. I'd be a Hopeless Passive Aggressive Armchair Quarterback to suggest it or expect it to happen.

KUPD and KISS??

I think he meant Hot 97.5. I would say that those two have very similar formats.

I would also venture to say, like KDM 7000, that KZZP 104.7 KISS FM, Movin' Hot 97.5 and 101.5 The Zone, I mean Free FM, oops Jamz are all very similar format wise. Notice how at one point (in the somewhat not too distant past), all three of those stations had distinctively different formats? Not anymore! Further proof of the boring and bland state Phoenix radio is currently experiencing...

Even before 104.7 was Kiss, they were still the same format. You'd have to date back to KVRY for a different flavor

I don't know, I would argue that the music KZZP played was far different from the music played by KISS. KISS has evolved over the years, but for a while there, they would only play hip-hop, rap and contemporary R&B. KZZP used to play all kinds of musical genres and was more of a true top 40 station. In my opinion, KZZP was a much better station than KISS.

To me, "ZZP version 2" was the same as KISS. Both being owned by the Devil (CC), they basically always shifted to whatever would steal listeners from Party 103.9 or Power 92.3. Since they had Mix 96.9 in the late 90's, they pretty much focused on the other side of Pop (Rythmic / Urban) which is also what dominated Billboard in this Era as well. It wasn't until recently that there has become more variety in CHR. Ever since it was discovered that Lady Gaga was the number 1 selling artist on iTunes a couple years ago, they realized that maybe "keeping it hood" isn't so great after all.

Nationwide Communications changed KVRY to KZZP again in '96 with a Modern AC approach, which became very successful until '98 when they switched the format of their sister station KGLQ, Eagle 96.9 from Classic Hits to Hot AC KMXP, Mix 96-9, with two very similiar sounding stations in the same cluster, that caused KZZP's ratings to take a big nose dive and KZZP evolved to CHR in '99 and they rebranded themselves as 104-7 'ZZP, Arizona's Hit Music Channel. Never cared for the whole Ron and Don morning show with Jackie West! They later piped in the Rick Dees Show from KIIS-FM in LA which bombed big time and it was dumped after a few months! A short while later, CC decided to rebrand the whole station to KiSS-FM in April of 2001. They had a very Rhythmic-leaning CHR sound at that time and they sounded best.
