On air changes at Mega?

I liked the Eagle. I didn't realize they lasted until 98.

I also didn't realize KVRY was dumped in 96. I thought it was a couple years later, but then again, I wouldn't listen to Modern AC station either.

I do remember 104.7 being quite vanilla at 1st, playing Smash Mouth and Chumbawumba type junk. When 103.9 came aboard, that all changed.

I liked Jackie West too but not with the Ron and Don Show! I enjoyed her when she was paired with Bruce Kelly in the morning during his return to KZZP in the late 90's! Btw, whatever happened to Jackie West?
 
KZZP was alright when they flipped to top 40 in 1999. In comparison to no top 40 at all, it was a great thing. But when they relaunched as Kiss FM in 2001, the new sound was MUCH much better.

I still remember back when they sounded like KMXP.

Well I spoke to my mother this morning and she told me "Eva plays the same songs over and over and over. Some of the songs are good songs, but a lot of them are stale."

Those were her words, not mine. I did not give any opinion of my own.

I told her that there was another old school station at 104.3. She tuned in and immediately started singing what was on at the time. I also programmed 104.3 where 95.5 used to be in her car while I was still downtown at her office building to see how long it would last.

She also started mentioning how Eva should go back to jazz. While she was being an Armchair Quarterback In Law, I started trying to explain to her about ratings, ClearChannel, and PPM. Her response was "a lot of people like to listen to jazz, and now there's no station playing it."

...But she never listened when they were jazz!!!

Well, I still listen to KWSS. In a way it's... refreshing. I don't get tired or burned out from it, except for during the middle of the day on weekdays sometimes.
 
KDM I think your mom has a good ear for music ;D. Any ways, I would like to see a good Mega keep playing the music they play 50% and add 50% new urban AC. This MAY, be a benefit to the station against EVA. EVA has been nose diving because there choice of playing played out songs over and over. If your gonna play the same song once every hour...whats the point. Eva stated out in 5.0 territory and now they are in 2.5 territory...hmmmmmmm ::)

As of the last time I checked on Friday, 104.3 is still on in her car.
 
Mega needs to be Phoenix, sound like the people in Phoenix and surrounding areas, play a much broader variety than the cookie cut out version and hit the streets hard.

The CC owned station is playing a different game, they are not a real radio station. They are homoginized.

Be real, the people will hear it and respect you. It's not that hard guys. Everytime they exhibit signs they are fake, plastic or not genuine...shout it out. Keep it Real, develop the DJ personalities to full bloom, let the listeners on the air, be at the events that fit your station everywhere...

I would love to be on the Mega Team if they were doing that! It's time to reap the harvest of the corporate radio station hatred listeners have.

That "top 10" finish is just a function of the market's size and a lack of Urban Oldies stations in larger markets. Above Mega on the list in KHYL/Sacramento, drawing comparable cume in a market almost half the size of Phoenix and XHRM/San Diego which is in a market comparable population wise but showing considerable more cume.

People don't know Mega exists. Until ownership puts some money into real marketing, the cume is going to stay exactly where it is. Unless they start getting ATE (or TSL for the old schoolers) comparable to KFYI they won't crack a 2.5 share.
 
I think I need some education here from some of the radio pros...

For a station like Mega, where the population of music to select from is static; in other words, no new music is coming out for them to select from, what's the role of a Music Director?

How much research can you do around what songs your demo audience wants to hear? I certainly understand you can decide to go broad or narrow, yet how much selection goes into it once your research is done? Do musical tastes change that much over time with this demo?

Often today the role of the music director is simply doing the daily music log.
