ON-AIR CONTESTS AND PROMOTIONS

Just throwin' this out there for discussion, but what contests and promotions do you fine folks think go over well here in the land of Joe Pa? Any memories of some classic stunts people had to pull to win somethin'? What do you feel makes a good contest and or promotion?

Just a lighter topic for y'all to chat about, that's all.

I've never known of any station around here giving away an X-Box or a Playstation to a listener if they could drink a whole ton of water without going to the bathroom but State College has had its share of contests and road show promotions.

WQWK has certainly had its share of unbelievable contests. The former Beaver 103 did a Valentine's Day contest that gave the winners limo rides to fancy dinners and fancy shows. Years ago, during a Stocker Chevrolet promotion, Kevin Nelson was hoisted, by crane, in a brand new Chevy and broadcasted from the car probably 5 stories above the ground.

Some of the best contests are the ones that are simple. Listeners enter and perhaps they have to do something creative but then they win money or something fancy like the limo and the dinner. Make listeners jump through too many hoops for too little and they lose interest.

As funny as this sounds and it may say something about the mentality of the listeners...but we see tremendous success with daily Lottery Ticket Giveaways. Just say "be caller 5 and you get the tickets" and the phones blow off the walls...and they take em seriously too. They are there at the station before the phone goes "click" when they hang up to claim their prize. Give them $100.00 and they are happy...give them a CHANCE at thousands on a lottery ticket and they are bouncing off the walls beyond belief.

Sounds simple...but it gets an incredible reaction.
