On-air talents talking about empty offices

Anyone else sick and tired of hearing the on-air talent moan and whine about how "no one is here" when speaking about other employees at the radio station?

I know it is supposed to be funny and accurately reflects the office atmosphere of many other companies in various industries, but sales types like myself and clerical folks who are friends of mine don't care for the CONSTANT reference to how quiet it is in the hallway, how everyone is out the door by noon, etc.

Get over it people. You are on the air so do your job and stop worrying about everyone else getting some well deserved time off or leaving a few hours early because the phones aren't ringing because most of the rest of the world is also off from work or leaving early.

Great point.

Inside content is dangerous for most of us...unless you're Howard Stern, Dan Ingram or a 'KB alumnus that used inside humor to cross-promote other dayparts.

On-air complaining must always be something that would resonate with your target. NO exceptions ever. If you have a station FB page, post your gripe and solicit comments...and always allow the listener the last word.

If you don't see your on-air bitchenmoan working under those or similar conditions, maybe better to keepyeryapshut.

I reallly make the effort to think how my content would be received by my listener if I was sitting in the car with them saying the same stuff.

Coming from a weekend and overnight background (mainly) I am indifferent to whether there is people there or not. Sometimes its nice to have quiet and no one bothering you, other times its downright spooky.

I'm pretty sure that most companies have been on a skeleton staff this past week. I'm sure that those who are still working have the same experience. I think that George is being a little oversensitive.

Axe, perhaps, but the topic is interesting.

When I've heard similar inside gripes, it has always sounded like a subconscious plea for appreciation or, in Stern's case, being completely self absorbed. The fact is we chose a 24/7 business, or five days getting up at 3am every week, and whining is a turn-off. I'd prefer to make people envy my job.

When I was alone in the building, I'd be openly thankful for being free from the office environment, having the fridge to myself, getting at least one cup of fresh coffee from the pot I just made before it was gone. I figured there were a lot more people who dreamed about freedom from meetings and politics than there were people who'd feel sorry for a disc jockey.

That's always been a fun 5 minute or so bit to me.

This year, I happened to be on the air for both 12/23 and 12/30 (which were Fridays, taking things to a more extreme level) and I stand by my decision to do an "if you're listening to this show from a cubicle right now, you should probably think about where you stand in the company" thing. I was also coming at it from an "I don't even work here and I'm on the air right now" perspective which further emphasizes the point.

George, EVERYTHING in real life is fodder for talk radio and the "I'm at work but this office is empty so I got a great parking spot" thing rings true to a lot of people. If you weren't at work, you should have been thinking "ha ha... suckers!" and gotten on with your day.

It's not brain surgery.

theradiokid and BradonWECK win the American Tourister luggage from Spiegel, Chicago, Illinois 60609 for having get the first two posts of the new year. Congratulations! (Taxes not included, cannot be exchanged for cash.) For what it's worth, music radio and talk radio are two different animals. Observational topics can work very well in talk radio, especially during holidays. It's like a Seinfeld episode. Heh... a guy who uses the name of two characters from that show might understand this. World's collide Jerry.

I'm not sure who's more dedicated - the two guys who posted before going to bed after celebrating New Year's, or the guy who got up and got on the computer before 7AM on New Year's Day.

In any event, Happy New Year, all. I hope we'll all end up healthy, wealthy, and wise.

observations:

when it is COMPLAINING: it always sounds like ....blah, blah,
and I can guarantee YOU the listener made fun of you, and
turned off the dial, and adding their own commentary, and possibly
have a "game changing" opinion of your on-air styles, lol

-BUT
if u have the PERSONALITY to pull this off - and u are on say, 7pm-(on)
and say, some thing to the effect, of (chuckle) Im not sure of the prize
because our promo guy, cut out early today ( must be nice) and ...
work that bit into your break, kudos! or, if the weather is BAD and
u say ( or voice track : ) and say, being only one here, I wish the
engineer didnt have to goto the tower tonight would have carpooled...
(fine)
even if the engineer is at the strip bar, i mean...home sleepin!!!! lol

but, if u[talent] sound BORED, and say, JUST ME: and u listening. to
the only guy here ( feel bad for me) or bring me food,
......yawn!!!
