On New Years' Day ...

Look for Cox to flip 106-9-The Point's very tired '80s Music for Contemporary Christian. Cox has turned a rock station into CCM in Tulsa, OK. I this CCM would work better on commercial stations, like KLTY in Dallas, where it is one of the city's Top Ten Stations. The Point's music would move next door over to KLDE (Houston's 107-5), where it will play classic hits from the '60s-On through the present. It MIGHT probably happen. The sounds of The Cars, The Police, Madonna, and U2 would be replaced by MercyME, Switchfoot, Amy Grant, & Michael W. Smith. This could happen.

Uh...doesn't Houston already have a pretty strong CCM station in KSBJ? They're the, I guess, 'Heritage' CCM station and don't seem to be struggling much.

Before Cox got ahold of 106.9 wasn't it a christian talk station (for a while)?

Of the hundreds of formats to chose from, I doubt they go with Christian.

I see you also predicted a flip back in August to Hispanic. just because they flipped an Active Rock station doesn't mean this will happen. I thought that also since 1069 loss their PD. any other Christian AC stations in Tulsa??? meanwhile, they are still sucking in the 80s. there are only about 5 other stations in the country with this format.

my prediction: JACK with Roula and Ryan. 1/3/06

article:
Tulsa Active Rocker KRTQ makes the switch to KKCM (Spirit 102.3) featuring the very best of "Today's Christian Music." The new Spirit 102.3 features artists such as Amy Grant, Mercyme, and Michael W. Smith. Tulsa radio vet Chris Kelly is named PD and morning drive host while Steve Hunter handles OM duties for the Cox FM cluster.
______________

KOBT later became KKHT, which can now be heard at 100.7 FM(If you happen to live east of Houston, You could hear it clearly). If Jack comes to 106-9, with Ryan & Roula on board, Then KLDE might flip over to CCM.

Tulsa has a strong CCM station in KXOJ, which has been around forever. I found the switch in Tulsa puzzling, and if 106.9 goes the same way, I would find it puzzling as well. But, there is currently no competition in the CCM format in Houston - you would have a commercial station trying to compete against a station that basically does fundraising for its operation.

I wonder whether Cox would not accept certain advertising as not being proper on this type of station as well.

Any new CCM station would have to do a overwhelming job against KSBJ to be successful. KSBJ is one of the best programmed non-comms you'll find anywhere.

KKHT was on 106.9 from 1995-2000. In the 80's 106.9 was the original KJOJ, owned by Jimmy Swaggart.

Which would bring the frequency full circle, as 107.5 was CCM KGOL in the early-mid 80's, before the flip to Classic Rock KZFX in 1986.

106.9 started as KNRO (licensed to Conroe...as it still is) then Jimmy Swaggart bought it and changed it to KJOJ. It stayed that way until Jimmy boy sold it to Regan Henry and US Radio. US Radio took it to Jazz then Shock talk radio KKHU then (and I think this is in the right order), U106.9 rock then ZRock..I doubt COX (who got it from Salem in a trade) will take it CCM

if Cox were to flip KHPT to CCM they should really think about a Christian Rock station like Power FM in Dallas,TX b/c i have read on here before(i may or may not be correct) that KSBJ has been looking to have a station dedicated to Christian Rock

> that KSBJ has been looking to have a station dedicated to

KSBJ had a big push a few years ago to establish an FM outlet for their "Lightforce" Christian Rock concept (which had a fulltime internet presence) but there was (ans still is) nowhere to put it...the non-comm section of the FM band here is full, and the commercial sticks are too expensive.

We will have to see where "Kank" winds up...perhaps at the new Houston Cox CCM 106.9?

I called a friend at Cox and they have a great attitude about this. They are not bad folks. In fact, I consider them to be a good bunch.

I know Bob Thornton has had a few good job offers and it wouldn't surprise me if he left KXOJ eventually. Our morning guy "Kank" is going to Houston soon. GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND!!!

I don't see any station in metro Houston flipping to CCM. Jon Hull reported the ratings for KSBJ on this board about six months ago and their ratings would put KSBJ in the number five slot, IIRC. KSBJ would be too much of a powerhouse to go up against and have any real success. A possibility would be Christian Rock, which was mentioned earlier. This is something KSBJ has wanted a second frequency for some years now. The format should definitely do better than a format that should have been yanked from 1069 years ago.

But alas this is Cox and there is every possibility that it will still be 80's music when the format is popular again in ten years.

I do give Cox an A for the changes that have been made to KLDE 1075. I rarely listen and was pleasantly surprised at the imaging and the music when I tuned in the other day. Never a mention of oldies, but the sound of a good rock station from the era of the 60's and 70's. I guess if Cox wants to be bothered they can put out a very decent product.

Didnt they already try Religous in 1995-2000? I wouldnt think they would try it again. with KSBJ- AFR - 105.7 & 100.7 I dont believe they'd try any more?
______________

Come to think of it...

> >107.5 started out as a Contemporary Christian Music Station back in the '70s as KGOL. then back in the '80s, KGOL moved its operations from the studio located across from The Astrodome(Where it's now Days Inn)to Humble. It Dial Position was moved from the end of the dial to the left of it. Afterwards, They Changed its calls to KSBJ. the only trace of KGOL can now be found on an AM station in Humble, which is now multi-lingual. KSBJ, which stands for Keep Standing By Jesus, has been a forefront to CCM for over 25 years. It now has 4 stations carrying its programming, and it is also going HD, which allows listeners to choose 3 different kinds of music: Gospel, Christian Rock or Its main station. I think it's great to hear something on the bright side, instead of being let down. I think Brother Joel from Lakewood might plan to buy a radio station in Houston that will change the way we listen to CCM. Lakewood also owns KTBU.

Actually it is the old KLJT 107.3, the origin of the Lake Jackson license. Don't remember anything about their programming.

> KGOL moved its operations from the studio located across

Huh??? KGOL was sold, the signal was upgraded, and it flipped to Classic Rock KZFX. The Humble AM was an unrelated operation that flipped from AC KTUN to a religious format, picking up the castoff KGOL calls.

> Dial Position was moved from the end of the dial to the left

Huh??? again. KSBJ is not related to KGOL. It has always been KSBJ since sign-on in the early 80's (then on 88.1.)

The first sensible thing said so far.

I doubt that. FM sticks cost a ton of money, and aren't going to be sold to stand-alone operators in a market.

> Lakewood also owns KTBU.

Perhaps not for long if rumors are true.

I think you are totally way off in your history.....
KSBJ did not come from KGOL.....KSBJ signed on the air at 88.1 long before KGOL left 107.5 (and found itself on the AM band)..As for KTBU, it is for sale....and likely "Brother Joel" will not be buying a radio station in Houston anytime soon...none are available or for sale...and likely wont be for the forseeable future.
