On the former IQ 106.9

Talk radio on the FM dial in Philly has had a long and storied history, since the days of WWDB 96.5. IQ 106.9 was a good idea, but didn't work. Surprising for a few reasons. One, 106.9 has an amazing signal in Philly. Two, conservative talk does just fine on 1210am, so an FM counterpart you'd think would be sustainable, too. Was it the lineup? Probably. From what I remember, WWIQ didn't have the biggest names WPHT did, like Rush. That's why I think if WPHT was on 106.9 instead of the IQ lineup, it would probably still be on today.

I think we'll see another stab at FM talk down the road, perhaps sooner than later. We know stations like WNTP 990 has listeners, but never once shows up in the books. We know WPHT does fine. FM talk is just begging to come back, as most other major markets has FM talk/ news. WMAL in Wash DC. WBAI in NYC. WCFS in Chicago.

The internet is your friend. If you had searched the topic, you'd come up with this link:

It was huge news when it happened. Rush left WPHT for WWIQ in 2012. When 106.9 failed, he had to crawl back to 1210 on his hands and knees.

WWIQ failed for many reasons, but it's part of the bigger failure of Merlin Media. They bought stations in NY, Philly, and Chicago, and failed in all three. The trifecta!

BTW I wouldn't use WBAI as a good example of FM talk. WNYC might be a better example, but it's NPR.

Two things, one, you're absolutely right and it was a massive failure on my part and lack of research. I totally forgot rush was indeed on WWIQ. (tbh, I was much younger when WWIQ was on air and didn't listen much)

Secondly, being close friends with Al Gardner who worked at WWIQ he's told me a lot about merlin media. Sorry for the confusion again.

WWIQ would still be here to this day had it been run by another company. It was a fine concept. Merlin seemed to not run any of their stations very well.
