On the radio: Hendrie is back, but try to find him

By GARY LYCAN
Special to the Orange County Register

One year ago, Phil Hendrie left talk radio. The man of many voices – and characters – had a successful career spanning the '90s, first in Minneapolis, then in Los Angeles on KFI/640 AM and, by 2005, on KLAC/570 AM. He quit to explore acting and other writing opportunities. It made sense. He already had a successful side career as a voiceover on TV's "King of the Hill," "Futurama" and other shows.

Come Monday night, though, he will be back in radio syndication at 10 p.m. with a three-hour nightly talk show. Word is it will focus less on comedy, more on current events and satire, but always with the Hendrie spin.

When Hendrie first started here on local radio, listeners thought the guests were for real. It took a while to figure out the absurdity – and entertainment value – of Hendrie interviewing characters he had created in his head. But then, that's what radio is about – the theater of the mind.
