Once again showing an unerring knack for what a market needs...

Miller Communications flips 99.3 in Florence from rhythmic to country, under the Cat Country brand. That's now 4 country signals in the Florence metro.

That's sad. Maybe I can feel a little better about living in Greenville now. Florence is too small a market to have 4 stations of the same variety no matter what format it is.

Wab,...as usual,...it's good to hear from you.
Let's see....Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm FOUR! Yipes!
It's no secret that I'm not a fan of what they are now calling/programming as Country music. The stuff just makes my hair hurt! Weekly singles from monthy albums, each with a hemroidal video, and a cardboard stand-up at Walmart. A format that kills its own young, when they are three albums old.
Where is Wade Hayes, Tracy Byrd, and Doug Supernaw? Answer: Playing the package shows on the state fair circuit, just to pay the rent. Your Christmas album is outta print, and your knees are bleeding from sending up prayer that hopefully a Greatest Hits comp will get released. There are some talented artists there, but most are failed Pop acts, trying to catch at least one wave. Four Country stations in one market...
Man, that smells! How much are I-pods?

Duck Season!

Give it time... Miller will change formats again somewhere with his stations... WOW 4 country stations in Flo Town!!! Now that is overkill. Now let's just look at it from another point... Miller being a smaller company might be going after those businesses who can't afford Cumulus or Quantum... Country in smaller markets always seems to do good and from a mom and pop business standpoint Harold may do some crazy things, but going country and going after those smaller businesses may be one of the smartest things he could do... JMO... CC

I might agree with CC but two of the four are Harold's: 97.1 (Cat Country) and 99.3 (Kat Country). Then you have Wheelz and Eagle. I dunno. Anyone want to guess Miller's next step?

Kinda curious since I don't live there anymore, but is 97.1 by chance a LPFM station??? If that is the case I could see 99.3 as being the main station and 97.1 as being filler unless they are programing 2 different country formats... Kinda curious. Strange but curious...

Rhythmic and Urban just don't stand a chance in South Carolina anymore. Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Columbia and now Florence. Is Greenville next?

Don't know if I'd say that's true with Greenville. 107.3 JAMZ (urban) does quite well in the ratings. And B93.7 is fairly rhythmic leaning, although it is reflective of the Top 40 anyway.

I think anyone would be crazy to start a new Country station here. WSSL 100 and WESC 92.5 are too strong to compete with IMO (not to mention a few smaller, less powerful country stations that dot the Upstate).

I don't think Greenville will see any change. COX Radio has a monopoly on Urban-type outlets in Greenville (WJMZ & WHZT),
they're both doing well, and I doubt COX would ever flip either of them. COX does alot of Urban formatted stations.
The only other choice for Urban on the dial in the eastern Upstate is CBS Radio's 101.9 WBAV from Charlotte, weak in Greenville.
If anything we could use another by blowing up a country station, theres way too many of that here already.
The ubrans here need some sompetition, I'd love to see 92.5 or 106.3 flip to Urban or Rhythmic AC.

I can already hear the following as country on the FM dial from Gaffney:
92.5 WESC, 96.9 WKKT, 97.5 WCOS, 99.9 WKSF, 100.5 WSSL, 103.5 WBCU, 103.7 WSOC, 104.3 WZZQ. Thats already overkill.
I've been in SC over 6 years, and the only country station I've seen disappear since I've been here was a
105.7 WFMX in Charlotte, the 105.7 moved to the Triad and became a CHR! :D

how is HOT 98.1 doing these days? still playing the rhythmic/pop/urban format?

Don't think you'll see either of those flip with WESC and WORD doing well on them. I do think 96.7 Shine or even 93.3 would be a candidate.

While I'm happy with WMYI's recent flip to mostly Hot AC, I think if they Upstate needs anything it needs a better rock station. Rock 101 is straight classic rock and The Planet is not a good representation at all of "new rock" (more like redneck rock as I've said in other threads). Don't know if we'll ever see a better "new rock" station as it may not fare well anyway, but to me, after the recent MY filp, it's the biggest gap there is. I know there's been some clamoring for an oldies station as well, but that format would fare better on a less powerful signal.

As for Hot 98.1, yeah, they're still around, but think they're generally being crushed by JAMZ

EDIT: Just checked the Summer book and JAMZ continues to lead the market with a 9.6 with HOT 98.1 at a 4.9 and seems to swap back and forth with 93.7. Country still dominates the market with WESC and WSSL splitting hairs at #2 and #3 so that's why another country is far from needed.

One reason Hot 98.1 is around is to protect Jamz, since 98 IS rhythmic CHR. They are able to get some of the CHR and the Urban audience with the music they play. Their playlist looks like they tend to overplay some songs that are old hits or never were very big ones. Not very impressive.

Put me down for another rock station. The stations with the most potential to change are 96.7 and 93.3, but they've lingered for years as they are. I think that everything else is safe, right now. Not a big fan of 2 country stations owned by the same company here at all, but both do well and are going nowhere.

Ultimately, IMO, the biggest audience that is untapped in the Upstate is the one for classic hits or oldies. Sure, 103.3 plays some at times, and maybe the AC's play an occasional 70s song, or classic rock on 101.1 - but we don't have anything like Magic 98.5 in Columbia that focuses on a variety of hits from the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s. The format has had a massive comeback in the past 4 years, but it's continued to miss us.

So Miller flips another one gee I hope he can compete with that many of the same format in the market. I guess he is going for the country king but I don't care what he does in our market we haven't lost one person on our station WLRE for our backers and yes his sales people have fooled a few people but that doesn't last and the few he has gotten in our area never did anything with us anyway. I am glad he knows what the market wants since we have been doing it for 11 years in our area. Also if he likes Country Music then where was he 11 years ago when we started WLRE radio, granted he bought the Bamburg station and then the Orangeburg/St Mathews stations four months after we went on the air but he didn't start with Country Music until he put the translator station in Sumter just a few years ago we been covering our area with Country Music for 11 years. If he is going to compete in Florence I guess more power to him as for our area we are the country station and were are going to stay that way as for anywhere else go for it.

Was Power not doing well? Im not really sure how the station sounded but did they try to go after WYNN at all?

As for 103x I wonder if they will try to get the Kidd Kraddick now because sister station Mix 97.7 in Myrtle Beach has them in the morning.

Re: 103x, my understanding was that Fisher & Mattie are doing pretty well, so, costs aside, you have to think they'll ride that train til it derails.

As for Power, it's weird...it's the one station Miller had that had any real ratings. Nothing stellar, of course, but if memory serves it was Harold's ratings leader by a considerable amount in Florence. But a couple weeks ago, they cut Buddah Ratt and the other Power jocks and now they're jukeboxing a country station where they once had a 4 share 12+. I long ago gave up trying to figure out Harold Miller's advanced radio thinking. It's beyond me.

Miller seems to use the same brands and formats in all their markets with just a couple formats being different.

As for Power going Kat Country, I don't see why they went country. With Eagle's ratings and powerful signal then you got Wheelz 100.5 which helps Cumulus keep Eagle down.

Wow I remember when WTWE 92.1 moved to 92.5 and became WHLZ wheels 92.5, thank you very much Travis Rhoades for the wheels name back then and Betty Roper said that it would replace 3/4 of the country music listening area left hanging when then WIGL wiggle 106.7 country suddenly changed formats and left country listeners wondering what happened and created a huge hole in the state for country music listeners. Of course WHLZ wheels 92.5 soon filled the void with it's 1600 foot tower and 100,000 watt signal and soon became one of the largest most listened to station in this part of the state. Flash foward to today WHLZ 92.5 is sold by Cumulus to Apex and moved to Charleston with a format flip while the call letters are put on a weak 6KW signal near the NC border 100.5 and can't be heard in 2/3 of it's old listening area just to control Egale 92.9's ratings which by the way they didn't even play country music back when WHLZ 92.5 started. Now Harold is putting in or fliping stations to country music there by overlaping existing country stations in many many areas, I won't count Sumter's 92.3 cat country since Sumter didn't have it's own country station that I am aware of on FM unless there is one close by like mine is for Elloree, Santee, Orangeburg now over laped by cat country 105.3. Man how things have changed now with Millers moves we have country music stations often more than 2 or 3 over laping in many many areas and B 106.7 now has troubles and 92.5 in Charleston is back to playing country music. What a strange full circle this is becoming, whats next?

Yes. Not only LFPM but an HD-2 channel of WSIM.
And it's on AM too. I thought about trying the AM station on the way to the beach.
