Once again, Syracuse urban listeners get the shaft

As WPHR/Power 106.9 moves to AM as "Power 620" and News/Talk takes over 106.9. Wooooow...

Uh, did Syracuse at any point have a full-service urban station that played hip-hop along with R&B and soul? The former WRDS and WOLF sounded like straight Urban ACs from those airchecks even in 1996 when the format was still considered in its infancy.

WPHR was a straight-ahead Urban when it debuted in 2000 until it shifted to Urban AC in 2003.

SMH, another example of Clear Channel could have just moderated the station to serve everybody instead skewed it to one side, thus leaving out those whom enjoy the other or both.

I have airchecks of it when it was mainstream urban.

I think WOLF-AM was mainstream urban at least some of the time in the 90s. I will post a few other WOLF airchecks in the near future.

Looks like CC was simulcasting WSYR-570's News Talk on the HD-2 side for 106.9, I guess that's moving to the main frequency on 106.9 in place of WPHR's Urban AC format which is now on AM 620. Hopefully they'll simulcast the Urban format on 106.9 HD-2 so that way they'll still have a place on the FM dial.

Another shame for the upper east, first Pittsburgh now Syracuse. I have a aircheck too of Hip Hop Power 106 loved it, wasn't interested at the time when they went UAC but did listen to them at times. Shame..

At least in Syracuse case the station is still on the air. Pittsburgh got totally wiped out.

true, but now it makes sense, much like how clear channel did in Des Moines killing 1063 the Beat after it trumped Kiss 108, of course they made Power 1069 UAC to boost ratings for Hot 1079, and then most people in their teens and 20s dont even know how to change the channel to AM, which will pretty much seal the 1079 ratings once again... BLAH although when an Urban or Rhythmic disappears in the market, many just go back to CD's and mp3s.

This is just sad. It is another example of how Clear Channel does not value the urban format or audience. I really pray for the day when this huge company and all of its retarded big-radio cousins cease to exist. I hate to sound like such an old-head but I surely miss the mom-and-pop-shop days.
