One Boston "Big Three" Affiliate Didn't Caerry The President

Last night (December 16th) at about 8:35 P.M. EST, President Obama spoke in Newton, Connecticut about the massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School there two days earlier.

Nationally, NBC carried the speech, as did ABC, CBS, and CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC.

The portion of the game not seen on NBC was shown on CNBC and NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus).

However, one NBC station didn't take the President, and stuck with the game: WHDH-7 here in Boston, perhaps because the game involved the New England Patriots and was played in nearby Foxboro.

I wonder if WHDH made the call to stick to the game, or if there was some kind of NFL policy that prevented WHDH from taking the speech.

If anyone in the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area (the home market of the visiting team) is reading this message, please reply and tell me whether or not NBC O&O KNTV-11 there stuck with the game of not. That information would be greatly appreciated.

WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30 of New Britain/Hartford carried NFL from NBC. The services in Newtown with Obama aired in its entirety on WVIT-TV 30-2, normally their Weather Plus channel.

In a similar move, WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford had a split screen on during overtime with Pittsburgh at Dallas. That was around when Air Force One landed at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT. WFSB went straight to the services as soon as overtime ended in Dallas.

WHDH definitely aired the President, I watched it. Besides it was network programming, so they had to air it.

I'll second that, WHDH definitely cut away to run the president's speech. I don't know what you were watching, Joseph...

Re: One Boston "Big Three" Affiliate Didn't Carry The President

After Al Michaels said the broadcast network would cut away, WHDH-7 still had about a minute of the game, so I changed channels, assuming that the station would stick with the game.

Personally, I wish NBC could have persuaded the NFL and the game officials to stop the game when the President spoke; that way, it could also have been carried on the large video screens inside Gillette Stadium.

I apologize for the misinformation.

Well, the league can only do so much for our President. You mean to tell me moving the season kickoff game to a Wednesday night wasn't enough?

I was at a benefit concert in Salem and they had the Pats game on the TV and it did switch to
the prez. It was probably on Ch 7 (after a few minutes someone switched it to the other NBC
related channel, NBC sports or was it CNBC, that picked up the game during that time)

NBC Sports

Is NBC Sports a re-named Universal Sports, which used to air on sub-channels (including 50.3 in Derry, NH), or is it a separate cable/dish service? ???

NBC SportsNet is the former Vs. (Versus) cable sports channel. Universal Sports was the over-the-air sports channel which folded at the end of 2011. The only connection was the they are/were both associated with NBC-Universal.

universal sports did not fold they went exclusive to direct tv and dish network and any cable companies willing to carry it. i have direct tv and still have it but i don't watch it.
