About 3:30 on Monday afternoon, March 27th, a tower crew was installing a transmitting antenna for WYAT-LP (Channel 40) from the top of the WMVA-AM (1450) tower on Chatham Heights Road in Martinsville.
Details are sketchy at this time, but immediately after completing installation of the new antenna, two tower workers fell from the 400+ foot tower. One tower climber is now reported dead as a result of the fall. The other climber was placed on advanced life-support and life-flighted to a hospital in Roanoke, where he is listed in critical condition. Neither tower climber has been identified at this time by authorities.
It appears that the climbers were using the rigging placed at the top of the tower to descend from it following completion of the installation of WYAT-LP's antenna. Something happened to that rigging, causing it to release the ropes attached to the climbers, and resulting in the fall.
You can find the latest continuing details of the incident HERE or HERE.
