One Fine Day, Kensington, and WNTP

I was listening to WNTP this morning on the way into work and I heard something rather disturbing. The local news guy (don't know his name) read a brief news headline after a commercial break under Bill Bennett's bumper music.

On paper it sounds like a great idea and makes for tight radio to give a headline or two under the bumper music before the syndicated host starts speaking, but the problem is that the headline was about a shooting in Kensington while The Chiffons song "One Fine Day" was playing in the background.

Mr. Tetro, just a programming note from a listener... Please reconsider reading news into and out of show breaks. Obviously it wasn't done on purpose because the news is local and Bennett is syndicated, but it came across in poor taste. Perhaps news should only be read at the top and bottom of the hour so that something like this doesn't happen again.

Years ago at a Rush affiliate, we used to read the weather over his theme from the Pretenders. Rush never started talking until 30 seconds in. It was perfect. Maybe that's what WNTP could do if they're looking to squeeze in some information over the bumper music. That way they'd avoid what Radio Wreck noted.

I will pass the information on to the appropriate programming people.

LOL Ok. If that's the case, then can you explain why music sounds so much better on WNTP than on any other AM in Philadelphia? Sinatra on 1210 sounds Ok, and 1340 is average for an AM in my opinion, but when the hosts play music on 990, both the bass and the highs in the songs come thru crystal clear on my radios. Is the audio processed differently somehow?

Well, I won't publicly discuss up my processing specifics/settings, other than to say that I am using an Omnia processor. This is just my opinion, but I've always found I can get more out of an Omnia than I can an Optimod. I have an Optimod 9200 as a backup processor, but I can't "push it" to the same degree as the Omnia without getting some annoying artifacts.

Other than that, I think a part of it is that we are not using IBOC. Therefore, the analog audio goes out to 10khz, while stations using IBOC must limit their analog audio to 5khz.

Thank you for the compliment. :)

Hey Rene, I work in New Castle Delaware and can not get WNTP on the radio there, but can get it online. Is there any way you can fix it so that the local stuff from WNTP doesn't come blasting out as it's far louder than the network feed from Salem. I'm in a large room where I set the volume and am busy moving around the room doing repair work to instrumentation that our customers send back for repair, so I'm not right at the desk with the computer. I get it set so I can hear Bill Bennett or Dennis Prager, sometimes I'll try to tolerate Mike Gallagher, but when the local avails and news, etc come on it's way too loud. So then I've got to run back to turn it down so I'm not bothering someone in the next room as it's really loud.

Thanks. Enjoy your station and am glad to be able to listen online as Rush/Beck/Hannity are a bore and Bennett, Prager, and Medved are a refreshing change in conservative talk, as you say, intelligent conservative talk.

Yeah, there really needs to be some processing on the NTP web feed. The local content is way too hot to the point where the essing and general distortion gives me a headache. The network content sounds great, this is just the local drop ins. 990AM may sound good, but how about some love for webstream listeners?

It could have been worse - the news person could have teased an item about the Japanese earthquake/tsunami over the "One Fine Day" music bed...

Did you hear about what happened on WBZ in Boston the other day?

It could have been far worse if the news person played the following tunes while reporting on Japan.

Ride the Wild Surf
Wipeout
Catch a Wave

In fact someone criticized KCAL-TV 9 in Los Angeles for running an ad for a co-owned FM smooth jazz station. The station is KTWV known as "The Wave".

Seriously, people need to chill out a touch. ;)

We do run processing on the we stream, although not much - just a basic compressor/limiter. We occasionally get some files that are recorded extremely hot, and they get past the processor. I've increased the gain reduction on the compressor/limiter to see if it makes a difference.
