One more thought about affiliation swaps

It is interesting how some stations can do
poorly with one network, then switch and do
much better with their new network. Below,
I mentioned WTSP/10 Tampa/St. Petersburg, which
has done far better with CBS than it did with
ABC. WLKY/32 Louisville is another weak ABC
performer that became a strong CBS affiliate,
especially in daytime. WXIA/11 Atlanta, while
by no means number one in the market, does seem
to have done better with NBC than it did with
ABC. I doubt if these stations' current networks
would be willing to give them up.

Tampa and Louisville have a strong CBS tradition.
Channel 11 in Atlanta probably wasn't hurt by the
move of WAGA/5 from CBS to Fox, but Atlantans are
fiercely loyal to WSB/2. Still, NBC was the best
thing to happen to WXIA.

It had me thinking about something I read about the Cincinnati network switches of WCPO and WKRC-TV in 1996. The article said that CBS has always been a strong performer and has had a strong tradition in Cincinnati, no matter what station CBS was on. Just like with WITI and WISN did with ABC and CBS in Milwaukee twice (1961 & 1977), WCPO originally signed with ABC when it signed on the air in 1949, while WKRC went on the air with CBS in 1948. The two swapped their respective nets in 1961 and of course, swapped back again in 1996.

Jacksonville also has a strong CBS tradition. WTEV 47 has done much better with CBS than it has with UPN, although WTEV was one of the top-rated UPN stations before the switch.

Some do better losing their network affiliation.....KTVK in Phoenix is the top rated station in its market, even after losing ABC to KNXV in 1995

Apparently, KTVK is one of a kind -- KRON in San Francisco and WJXT in Jacksonville also became independent after dropping their networks, only for them (especially KRON) to lose ratings to the new affiliates.
