One reason why even HD FM will fail in the marketplace.

But at about the same time, T-Mobile announced that streaming music (e.g. Pandora) will NOT count against the 4G data cap. Another nail in the coffin.

As I am fond of saying, that does not help me out here in 2G land :)

It's only a nail in the coffin if people want to use Pandora that way. OTA radio is a very different experience from Pandora. Once you place them both on the same platform, the choice is between do you want to listen to YOUR music collection, or a curated collection of songs in your favorite genre. Those are two different experiences, and there's an audience for both. What radio companies are asking for is to allow people that choice. Phone makers aren't allowing that.

It doesn't only apply to Pandora though. iHeart is already supported and TuneIn is on the list to be voted on. If they add TuneIn and every station in TuneIn, it will be a significant blow to HD Radio for T-Mobile customers. And it wouldn't be surprising if other carriers follow up with a similar offering.

This would completely change the landscape of radio giving FM stations better reach and finally giving AM stations FM quality. Here in the Los Angeles area it would squash the discussions as to which FM to blow up to give us KFI-FM and KNX-FM (all news).

Oh, and giving us guilt free Pandora and iHeart custom station listening. Radio, the times they are a changin'.
