One rock station in Orlando, really?

No classic rocker, no new rock? Just let WJRR try to do it all? How about another rocker come back in 2012?

Well, you do have WMMO which is now sorta oldies-classic-rock-hits-ish.

But I am pretty shocked myself. There was a time not too long ago where 'JRR was usually in the top 5 overall, O-Rock would get a solid 2-3 share, and so would 'HTQ. Add that up and rock was by far the most listened to format in the area.

The big problem is that there are no real underperforming stations in the area now besides 98.1 which is going to be a dog of a signal for a rock format. And I seriously doubt anybody is going to buy up WPCV and switch it to an Orlando-based rocker...that'd be insanity at its best.

Radio-X

The market is 40% Hispanic and African-American, so your potential share for rock in that population is essentially zero.

Look at South Florida, rock has been dead there for 25 years.

Great, so that means 3 Hispanic stations and how many Urbans? Really, seems a little disproportionate?

And just up I-4 in Tampa, you've got Clear Channel chomping at the bit to wipe out 98 Rock in favor of a WFLA-AM simulcast...

After the disaster that was WHTQ don't look for anyone else to take a chance with a Classic Rock Format in Orlando. If WJRR can maintain a 4.0-4.5 Share it's very likey they'll be around for a while however I also do not think that anyone is going to come along with a Mainstream or Alternative Format to go up against 'JRR while JRR has only a 4 Share. Will also be interesting to see what WHOG in Daytona does since going from an 80's-90's Classic Rock back to a mainly 70's Classic Format.

Orlando once was a great rock radio market.

Where did all of those people go, to the old folks home?

::) ::) I'm not in one yet!!! BIGAPE

I miss my orock :(. I remember back in 2000 when it launched it was awesome. But over the years it got worse and worse. If we did get another rock station what signal would do it? I don't see why Orlando could not support another rock station.

In semi-related news, West Palm Beach CBS-owned Active Rocker 103.1 The Buzz just flipped to Adult CHR. If you want to hear current rock on your FM radio in S. Fla, you'll now have to drive to Naples/Ft. Myers (WJBX) or Key West (WIIS).

Tampa has been unscathed so far, but I suspect Clear Channel's Active Rock WXTB isn't long for this world.

Agreed on JRR's competitive situation. I've noticed a slight shift in their format to try to keep anyone from getting ideas about flanking them, but I think they're pretty safe.

WHOG on the other hand...I'm not sure I'm a fan of their move. I hope for their sake that they see an upside to it.

Funny, up in Jacksonville they have 3 rock stations, one classic rocker, one active rocker and one new rocker. Urban and Country all over the dial there too.... ;D

Jacksonville...21% African-American, 5% Hispanic

Orlando... 22% Hispanic, 15% African-American... and unless it has changed in recent years, the median age in these ethnic groups is fairly low, meaning a large portion of the young audience has no interest in Rock stations.

Jacksonville has 3 rock stations?
WFYV 104.5 (now active rock)
WMXQ? (may have gotten new calls?), 102.9 Alturnative
Classic rock? ware? Eagle is classic hits 96.9, 107.3 is not WPLA anymore but rather a60's-80's Oldies.

uh hello, Mr. Holcomb, 94.1 WSOS flipped to Classic Rock early 2011. There are your three rock stations.
