One-shot guest star ---> Return as a (different) regular character

There have been many examples in TV history (particularly in sitcoms) of an actor appearing on a show as a one-shot character, and then later returning to the same show as a different regular or semi-regular character.

The quintessential example of this phenomenon is Harry Morgan, who appeared in the M*A*S*H 3rd season episode "The General Flipped at Dawn" as the psycho General Bartford Hamilton Steele, then starting with Season 4 joined the regular cast as Col. Sherman T. Potter. I think this example is one of the most noted because of the popularity of the series, and the fact that Morgan made such a strong and memorable impression in his one-shot guest role as General Steele.

Some shows were noted for multiple examples of the phenomenon. Barney Miller was famous for certain character actors appearing again and again as one-shot characters (usually criminals), but there were two one-shots who then became longtime regulars as different characters.

** Steve Landesberg, who appeared in a Fall 1976 episode as a priest, then just a few short weeks later joined the regular cast as Sgt. Dietrich.
** Ron Carey, who played a burglar ("The Mole") as a one-shot, then became a regular as Officer Levitt the following season.

All in the Family was notorious for casting actors in regular and recurring roles who had previously played different characters. Among these:

** Vincent Gardenia played the neighbor who sells the Jeffersons his house, returns in a later episode as the male half of the "swinger" couple Edith innocently invites to the house, and then finally became a recurring character as neighbor Frank Lorenzo.
** Allan Melvin played a cop in a second-season episode, then later returned in the semi-regular role of Archie's friend Barney Hefner.
** Burt Mustin portrayed a night watchman in one episode, then subsequently returned several times in the recurring character of Mr. Quigley.
** Gloria LeRoy appeared as the wife of one of Archie's Army buddies, then later had the recurring role as Mildred "Boom Boom" Turner.
** Sorrell Booke did a one-shot as the manager of the TV station where Archie delivers his famous pro-gun editorial, then later on did four episodes as the recurring character of Archie's boss, Mr. Sanders.

So, two aspects to this thread....one, what are some of the many other examples of this that come to your mind? (Remember: one-shots who returned as different regular or recurring characters, not multiple single roles) And, two, does this phenomenon bother or annoy you in any way? (While all TV viewing requires a certain "suspension of disbelief," some of these more blatant examples stick in the craw of some fans...)

On the original Star Trek, Mark Lenard played a Romulan commander in an early episode, then returned on the series and in the films as Sarek, Spock's father. Although I was a fairly loyal fan of the show, I never noticed the same guy had played two roles until someone else pointed it out to me. There were a number of people who guested on the original ST in multiple one-shot roles, but no others IIRC who played one role more than once.

Actually, Sarek was also, in the context of the original ST, a one-shot role as well. However, Lenard went on to reprise the character in three of the films (III, IV, and VI) and 2 episodes of ST:TNG.

Mark Lenard also played the Klingon captain in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

That's right (I'd forgotten) -- Lenard is AFAIK the only actor to have portrayed a Romulan, a Klingon, and a Vulcan.

On Law & Order, S. Epatha Merkerson appeared in a first-season episode, "Mushrooms" (one of the few L&O episodes to have an official title), as a distraught mother of one of the victims. Three years later, she was cast series as regular "Lt. Anita Van Buren" when Dann Florek's "Donald Cragen" was written out of the show.

Also, a year before he was cast as "Detective Lenny Briscoe," Jerry Orbach played a defense attorney on the show.

On Beverly Hills 90210, the actor who played Stuart in the fourth season, who proposed to, and almost married Brenda, also appeared in the first season in one episode. I cannot remember the actor's name, nor can I remember the name of the character he played during that first season. The guy in the first season was someone they met while traveling. What both characters had in common was that they both interacted primarily with Brenda, and they both made Dylan McKay (Luke Perry) jealous! ;D

Dennis Franz played a crooked, corrupt detective named Di Bennadetto on Hill Street Blues a few seasons before he came back as a regular cast member, Detective Buntz. On NYPD Blue, Charlotte Ross appeared as a battered spouse a few seasons before returning to play the role of Detective Connie McDowell.

Law and Order does this a lot - as mentioned above with Merkerson. Another example is Annie Parisse who guest starred as a prostitute a year before she became a one-and-a-half season regular as ADA Alexandra Borgia.

This happens a lot with shows shot on the East Coast, and I'd speculate it's because there's a smaller pool of actors available. A few years ago, you'd see the same guest stars over and over on L&O, Third Watch, and the Sopranos. For example, Vince Curatola who played Mafia don Johnny Sack on the Sopranos had a recurring part as Bosco's dad on 3rd Watch. Some of these same actors showed up on The Wire, shot in Baltimore.

To answer Stanislav's question - NO - it doesn't bother me. This is acting, not reality. It bugs me more when these shows (especially soap operas) come up with some lame explanation for having a new actor in an established part. You know - the character has a terrible accident, and needs reconstructive surgery and then looks totally different. Problem is, he's now 2 inches taller with broader shoulders, different color hair and a different complexion. Not THAT'S lame - the better strategy is to bring in the new actor with no explanation whatsoever.

On "All In The Family" Vincent Gardenia played a swinger/wife swapper (with Rue McClanahan) in one epsisode and returned later as a reoccuring character Frank Lorenzo, Irene's husband.

Pay attention, Mark -- this stuff will be on the final exam! ;)

The show that spun out of 90210, Melrose Place, did it twice.

Linden Ashby and Rob Estes appeared separately in one-shot episodes: Ashby played the ex-husband of Jo (Daphne Zuniga), and Estes portrayed a college friend of Michael's (Thomas Calabro) who made a pass at his then-wife, Jane (Estes's then-real life spouse, Josie Bissett). Both men later joined the series as regulars: Ashby played "Dr. Brett Cooper", and Estes was "Kyle McBride" -- who was was paired up with Bissett's "Jane Mancini" at the series' conclusion.

I have a video from a Gunsmoke episode (c.1959) where Ken Curtis is a drover of some sort. Jack Elam (much younger than I remember) is in this one as well.

Ken Curtis in 1963 would join in the legendary show as Festus Haggen.

On Happy Days, Linda Purl played one of Richie's girlfriends in 1974 and then in 1982 she assumed the regular role of Ashley Pffistter (sp?) for one season, Fonzie's girlfriend and near fiancee, who was a divorcee and had a daughter played by Heather O'Rourke from Poltergeist.

On The Brady Bunch, one of the girls at Marcia's slumber party had a semi-regular recurring role a season or two later as Rachel, a girlfriend of Greg's. I believe they were both at the drive-in together when the frogs escaped! ;D

I seem to recall that Sherwood Schwartz's daughter(s) had recurring roles on The Brady Bunch. Whether "Rachel" was one of them, I'm not sure.

Jack Dodson appeared on The Andy Griffith Show as an insurance agent on one episode in the 1965-66 season, then joined the cast the next season as Howard Sprague

You have a good memory. According to IMDB.com, Rachel was played by Hope Sherwood in 4 episodes. She is the daughter of Sherwood Schwartz. Her husband is Laurence Juber, former guitarist for Paul McCartney & Wings. She presently sings in a band called the Housewives that features the wife of John Mayall and the wife of John Walmsley of the Waltons.

That girl who plays Paula (at the slumber party) the one who set Marcia up with the paper that got her in trouble, later went on to by Cybil's best friend in the show Cybil.

Not that that has anything to do with this thread but most people don't realize that.

...Martin Milner and Kent McCord were used repeatedly for one-time characters on "Dragnet" and then appeared on that series (as well as "Emergency!") in their "Adam-12" characters Officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed...

Harry Morgan on M A S H. He played an off-the-wall general in one episode, then returned as Col. Sherman Potter, head of the 4077th.
