One station you want back

John1 said:
Spring of 1975. 95PEN - Loren Owens, Mike St. John, Geoff Fox, great jingle package & fast-paced delivery. Simulcast for about 6 months until the advent of Magic 103. The station added AC hits & Joe Niagara before becoming 'The Station of the Stars' by 1979.

WOW, yes, I remember. Just before they launched the Oldies format, they were running their pre recorded history of Rock. Started at 1955, then worked it's way up. Use to listen nine hours a day at work, a textile factory.loved Geoff Fox and his joke of the day segment. Yeah, when radio was fun to listen to.

Gotta agree with Big Jay 75%. I would go with either WHAT or WDAS-AM running 50s-60s-70s RnB gold as my 3rd Alternate...not that you can hear either station ::)

Well, I guess I got my third alternate. "WDAS-AM is back." See the thread.

Another one would be 97.5 The Hawk. I didn't live here when it was around but I heard that it was a great station. My 2nd alternate would be 96.5 The Point.

Gad, there are so many stations I'd like back. Philly was my favorite radio market back in the 1960s and 70s. But I have to agree with those who'd like to hear WIP - as it sounded at the height of its ownership by Metromedia. The station had it all: music, personality, news, weather, sports
- and a level of professionalism not reached by most stations anywhere.

After that, WFIL circa 1967-75
WIBG (actually my favorite era for them was roughly 1969-75 despite their true dominant period being the late 50s to about 1967, but your mileage may vary)
WPEN in its first year as Oldies 1975-76
WRCP AM&FM when they were Country
WDVR as Beautiful Music circa 1960s and 70s
WCAU as all-news

I could go on...

I'm surprised WJJZ 106.1 hasn't been mentioned yet.

I'd second this... and also a return of full-time Classical WFLN so WRTI could return to full-time Jazz.

If you ever want to see all-classical in Philly again, the station will almost certainly have to be a non-commercial outlet. Should CBS decide not to buy 106.9, it might be a good facility to put a full-time classical station on.

Odd ... or maybe not ... that there is a thread similar to this on the Detroit board of Radio-Info.

Two others I haven't seen mentioned, at least in terms I remember:

I lived in NE Phila for a few years, late 80's. WPEN then was a treasure. I'd listen mostly at night after work. Managed to fill quite a list of 'want-list' songs from their Standards. I don't think I ever heard the format done better, anywhere -- and I mean even when the format was far more contemporary. And in the late 80s, it really stood out, even to this listener/former DJ/rocker.

And I know it was nowhere near their heyday, but the WHAT 1340 that came in afternoons and evenings with the show 'Night Flight' was terrific. Even though where I lived was within the city limits (Academy Road) WHAT's signal used to get chewed up a bit. Believe it or not, THAT part I also liked ; me being a DXer.

Aside from that, there are only about two thousand stations I'd like back.

The Eagle 106 and Q102 CHR war days were great. Q102 always sounded great under Mark Driscoll.

Nobody mentioned Y100?

Besides you, one person earlier in the string, xkrusdx, did mention Y-100.

Interesting observation though. Only two mentions compared to the surprising interest in a relatively shortlived 95PEN oldies station is interesting indeed.

My list:

Late top 40-era WFIL
WFIL reborn in the mid-eighties (a guilty pleasure)
WIFI both top 40 (well-executed) and I-92 (fun, and, for me anyway, less about lifestyle than Y100)
Progressive rock WIOQ - great personalities
Late 80s PST with modern rock in the rotation and great personalities
97.5 the Hawk

Just to bring back memories of high school I would like to see the return of "Between the Sheets" on star 104.5 with Christopher Knight. I still get flashbacks when I hear certain songs and does anyone know what song always closed the program?

TimW it was "I Believe In You And Me " The Four Tops"

I'll second this one ... particularly before they increased the frequency of urban contemporary tunes in what would portend their move away from the Rock of the '80s format. Jocks included Mel-vanious Toxic, Bill E, and the late Lee Paris, aka Lee Salmons, who left us 25 years ago at the way too young age of 31.

What Philly radio station would you want back and how would you want it programmed?

I suspect I'm a distinct minority on this one: I miss WFLN 95.7 / Classical Music.

When I moved to the Philly area in 1979 I knew I'd arrived in a "big city" because they had a commercial classical station...on both AM (900) and FM!
