It was one year ago Friday that Y100 signed-off. To mark the anniversary, <a target="_blank" href=http://formatchange.com>The Format Change Archive</a> has added the audio of the sign-off of Y100 in addition to the final half-hour of Preston & Steve's show that morning.

Now in the year that's passed, we've seen WMMR surge up the ratings with the addition of Preston & Steve, WYSP drop much of its music for talk, and little talk of another Alternative station in the market. Given the state of Modern Rock nationwide, it's doubtful we'll see the format return in the forseeable future, however what do you all think it will take for the format to successfully thrive in Philadlephia?<P ID="signature">______________

I don't know that I've seen it posted here, but WYSP has an alternative stream in the works.

Alternative won't thrive in Philly. Urban markets are urban markets. It's just what it is.

That said, it has been quite a year hasn't it. Think about back when WMMR was treading water, WYSP had Stern and O&A, and the future seemed certain?

In the last ratings the 2 "heritage" urban stations were top 10, others lower. The urban audience is divided over many stations, country, news & some other single station formats are not, that's why 1 urban station doesn't dominate.
 
Is Y100 the "most cared about station" in Philadelphia's radio history? The fact that people are still talking about it a year later with passion points to a significant "maybe".

I understand your logic, but if it stands the total share of the market listening to urban would be greater than the total share listening to non-urban formats -- meaning the urban format as a whole dominates the market.

For the sake of argument I'm only counting the non-urban formats in the top ten. Also for the sake of argument, I'm counting every urban station in market (top ten or not). I'm also including WDAS-FM and WRNB as fully urban (heck I'll even throw in WPPZ, WIOQ, and WRDW); also I'm including WURD and WDAS (on the AM side). Again, just for argument, let's only look at the 12+.

Now since we can't post ratings in any form on the boards, you'll have to do your own math, but I'll give you a heads up before you get the calculator out. The urban stations only fetch about 46% of the market (even including all the gimmees I threw in -- it's much lower without them). Now mind you, this is pretending that there are no non-urban formats outside of the top ten. I only included WBEB, KYW, WMMR, WYSP, WOGL, WXTU, WMGK, and WIP. Urban's share of the market goes even lower if I include everything else.

Now I know the gut reaction to this is "well there are fewer urban stations than non-urban stations in market." Well if Philly was as urban as is being argued, the "fewer" urban stations would be the ones fetching the most listenership -- not B101.<P ID="signature">______________

I agree with you 100% Crisis. In Washington DC, which IS an "urban market", there are just as many urban stations as there are non urban stations as in Philadelphia (WKYS AND WPGC are the Power 99 and The Beat of Washington). However, WPGC and WMMJ (just like WDAS)are consistently #1 12+ every book.

Everyone,Philly is NOT an urban market. There are only 2 urban stations (Power 99 and The Beat). To me it seems to always come down to Black and White. It also seems to me that when a "black" format (whatever that means) is doing well (even though the #1's are usually KYW and B101) people flip out. Why do people care so much?
 
There will be an alternative station in Philly when another station fails. It's all about making money. Who is going to want/force to foot the bill for a flip? Ask any Sales Exec from Y100 how much money they made while working for Y. There is a place in our market for this type of rock. "Soooooooo whos comming with me?"

Since Greater Media put Preston and Steve on, WMMR is beating ALL THREE R1 stations in Philly. I bet if GM decided to put P&S up there in Boston where you are, they'd beat all of R1's stations up there too!

After reading about Radio One's deep involvement in the Payola machinations of the recent past (Source: Salon.com), I think maybe it's *They* who might be concerned about being "knocked off", though this time by the FCC!
