One-Year Anniversary for AN 106.7

All News 106.7 is about to celebrate their one-year anniversary. Has the radio station met expectations or exceeded expectations? Do you think the product continues to improve or is stuck in a rut?

I have been pleasantly surprised. Management is putting more resources than I expected into the station operation. The station has become better jumping in with breaking news. I do, however, think there is a danger of getting stuck in a rut with excessive use of sounders to introduce traffic, weather, sports, and business news. The talent is becoming better. The afternoon drive broadcasts are better than the AM broadcasts. Go figure?

The station seems to be fashioned after WTOP in DC. The AN 106.7 anchors seem to enjoy presenting the news, and it really shows in the morning and afternoon shifts. There seems to shades of Tom "The King" Hughes in some of the unusual and humorous stories.

More marketing of the station is needed. I haven't seen the billboards around town lately. And while AN106.7 promotes FOX 5, I haven't noticed any reciprocity on WAGA. I'm sure the other TV stations, even Channel 2, would welcome the advertising revenue. One other marketing mystery is AN106.7's presence on iHeartRadio. Most stations listed there either have the stations call letters or moniker, and station logo. All that's listed for AN106.7 is the station's logo, 106.7 and Atlanta. Not very good online marketing. Even WSB is listed as News/Talk WSB.

Lew and the boys put together a great station and hopefully it will be around for a long time.

Finally, though it does not matter in the station's marketing and/or moniker, WYAY are really stupid call letters. Out of curiosity, could Cumulus put the WABC calls on 106.7 or would Disney object even though Cumulus owns WABC/770 in NYC?

Yesterday afternoon, during the OK tornado coverage, I felt like the AN106.7 wasn't as extensive as WSB's...but it was "just enough". WSB went wall-to-wall with tornado coverage to the point of IMO being emotional or sensationalist...mikes in grieving peoples' faces and the like. I think WSB was just repeating the CNN feed, which is more proof that good TV isn't necessarily good radio. AN was keeping up with traffic much better...and there was a lot of bad traffic out there yesterday afternoon.

Its become a major part of my commute and most other driving i do across town. I avoid the station like the plague on weekend mornings and am disappointed with tech sporting events. I am going to work in the 3am hour and regularly listen to Maria Boynton and catch john and cheryl on my way home. I mix in a fair amount of the Game when i want a break from news. I gave up on conservative talk radio and gone to podcasts for real libertarian talk=. Having news and sports stations on FM is nice to avoid other types of talk.

Get rid of tech sports and weekend morning bs and i would be completely happy with mostly news 106.7fm

I agree with everything being said here - AN106.7 seems a bit more concise and on point with good balance of local traffic coverage and less "impact news" of mics being shoved in victims' faces. Agreed the sounders are a tad excessive but I just mostly ignore them. I get what I go there for - news and traffic. They do a good job.

I can't believe that flip was nearly a year ago!

I think all of the comments are spot on. They need advertising. Maybe, they should not be quite so married to the clock when there is a big story. And as we have all said, the sounders/voice overs are too much. The reality is the sounders are in the same number as the other news stations around the country. There are two reasons they sound excessive:

--The sounder package is loud and high pitched. The traffic and weather sounders are the worst because they sound like a bad distorted guitar that is too loud on a station the generally emphasizes the highs in its audio processing.
--The voice overs. No other profitable major market All News station in the country uses eight voice over sounders in thirty minutes. Most use two or three per 30 minute period.

Mark Woolsey should be moved to days. He has so much talent and I think it is wasted on the 7PM-Midnight shift.

The afternoon drive with Greg and Melisa is the bright spot of the day. I enjoy listening to them. They give me the news and they have very good chemistry together. The only change I would make is to schedule their time off together like most morning shows do. When they are scheduling days off and Greg and Melissa take the days off separately, it seems to take weeks for the show to come back. If they take time off together, then the afternoon drive is missing it's "groove" for just a few days.

Like what WSB-TV does with its radio counterpart (WSB-AM/FM) on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays with its ID prior to ABC'S World News Tonight at 7 PM, WAGA-TV should try with AN1067.

Good Day Atlanta uses an AN 106.7 reporter for various live reports. They also sometimes tag team the traffic with AN 106.7

From what I've listened, it's one of Cumulus' few bright spots. They seem to put quite a bit of resources into 106.7. You can't run a news format on the cheap and expect to succeed. Kudos for them doing something right.

I think they need the sounders to work the clock, to let people know of the next segment. It also makes the station seem more exciting and fast-paced. They just need to maybe come back on the volume, and if they could find something not so "intense" that would help as well. Back when WGST was all-news in the 1970s into the 80s and early 90s they had the WCBS sounder package and they ran that pretty consistently, but it didn't seem so "in your face" and intrusive. When WGST added talk the sounders were necessarily cut back.

But then again, this is the '10s, not the '70s/'80s.

A question I have is why they sometimes keep the stereo on during the news (as opposed to commercials). With their rimshot signal, that distorts things in a lot of areas.

Hopefully Barry will answer when he gets back from the Red Snapper.

The infomercials that they air on weekends disguised as talk programs frankly sullies the stations news reputation.

Are you "listening" AN106.7, or in this case, reading? BarryATL is concise and better describes what I was trying to say in an earier post.

Greg Black and Melissa Carter together is the station's best anchor team. I also like John Lisk and Cheryl Castro together. I've known John since the WGST days, and he's top notch. The morning drive broadcast leaves a lot to be desired.

The station's daypart ratings agree with the last paragraph.

I'll just agree with everyone else. Too many sounders, too much guitar, too much clock-glue. On the other hand, I am pleased Cumulus has given the station a full year (so far) to settle. They DO sound a lot smoother than in the beginning. A lot of work by a lot of people has paid off with a very good product that I have no problem listening to.

Except on the weekends. yeesh. If I were them, I'd fill up weekends with some syndicated talk even if that means dealing with Premiere. Got to be a way to make it work.

For what it's worth, Greg Talmage did a quick live shot from the radio studio on Fox 5 earlier this week. It was a face behind a mic so I am not sure it added a whole lot, but certainly Greg knows more about traffic than the TV people. Still unsure whether I like this marriage to Fox but it seems to be more balanced than it was.

For it's part, WSB talk now has four anchors in the morning. Moyer probably drops the average age in that booth to "below retirement age" for the first time in years. I kid. Coxe and Slade are great. WSB's "We're all news!" promos are a complete joke. They're as much all news as B98. Whatever, WSB. When is Boortz covering again?

Several have mentioned AN1067 being married to the clock. I was listening to KOMO Newsradio out of Seattle this morning to hear more about the I-5 bridge story. During a 30 minute block they carried the President's Memorial Day radio address. Ten minutes later in the same block they carried the Republican response which was a Senator from OK talking about how people could help and thanking them. Both were good radio. If I remember correctly, WTOP also carries the addresses every Saturday. Why does AN1067 not carry them?

The Presidents Saturday Radio address (and Republican response) is good programming on what is usually a slow news day. I wonder why AN1067 does not carry both?

I thought AN1067 had enough infomercials on Saturday ;D ;D.

I really like All News 1067, and I am tuned in constantly especially during drivetimes. But those infomercials are distracting for the brand. The times I could I could relax a bit and listen to the news without being on the go, there's no news!
