Online radio listening posts..

Well tonight, Dec 21, the shortest day of the year in the Northern hemisphere there were very good conditions on Transatlantic MWDX tonight:

Starting around 0511GMT I heard:

570 Radio Reloj Good
590 VOCM good
600 CBNA quite good
640 Cuba good
650 CKGA poor/fair
660 WFAN fair/good
670 Cuba fair
680 CFTR noisy
690 Montreal I think (fair)
700 WLW fair
710 Cuba fair/good
740 CFZM good
750 CBGY good
760 WJR good in clear (WJR has been VG lately when the band is open)
770 WABC fair
780 WBBM fair with .45 sports report on Bulls game
830 WCRN weak
860 CJBC fair/good
870 WWL weak, but matched with my radio--"Geico commercial"
880 WCBS fair good
890 WLS noisy
1000 WMVP weak/noisy
1010 WINS mostly on top of CFRB
1020 KDKA weak
1030 WBZ weak
1040 WHO fair
1050 Spanish--NYC I guess
1070 something, but too weak to ID
1080 WTIC fair
1100 WTAM fair
1120 KMOX fair/good
1130 WBBR strong like a local
1150 mix--unable to ID
1170 WWVA fair
1180 noisy mix--WHAM/Cuba
1200 WXKS weak
1500 WFED fair
1510 WUFC fair/good
1520 WWKB fair
1620 something but couldn't ID
1630 Canada "1630 C???" was heard but didn't get call
1670 something sounding like radio Disney, but not certain
1700 Sports talk/ fair/good --guessing KBGG

Over all this was the best reception I've heard on this receiver this year--Thanks Alan!

Corrections--1700 is KVNS with a good signal. Just caught the ID at 0700GMT
1630 I think was KCJJ, not Canada. Signal not as good 2nd time around so not positive on this one--did hear a C and a J so that must be it.

Your 1670 is likely CJEU in Quebec. They air "Radio Enfant" which is children's music-but sometimes teenage music is heard as well.

That's the music I was hearing. Thanks!

Nice catch any way you slice it....given that their local groundwave signal is rather pathetic. Or, at least that was the case when they first came on the air.

The high end of the band was really good that night.

Well whaddya know, the band was open tonight & Transatlantic mediumwave DX was on for the first time I've caught it in weeks.

660 WFAN fair/good
670 WSCR & Cuba with WSCR on top most
680 CFTR noisy
700 WLW fair

780 WBBM good
800 weak talk?
810 Country??
830 WCRN weak
880 WCBS fair good
890 WLS noisy
1000 WMVP weak/noisy mixing with another station
1010 CFRB on top of WINS

1110 WBT? weak

1130 WBBR good
1500 WFED fair
1520 WWKB noisy
1640 ?? talk

First time this year I heard the 4 Chicago blowtorches on the same night.

^ Just curious----I am not sure if I have ever seen WRKO reported on 680 on that node. I certainly don't hear it in FL, and there are 680's galore all over the US East. So.....which direction does WRKO's 50,000 watts at night go?

WRKO does send their signal towards the ocean, but I've never ID'd it on this receiver--only CFTR. I thought for certain I'd hear WRKO, but I never have.

Could the country actually be a European station? 810 is used in EU.

Re: 810 that is Radio Scotland (Westerglen) not that far from here.

TA condx have been terrible, hence the lack of activity on the Globaltuners node.

Did a quick listen on Transatlantic MW DX tonight and heard the Canadians coming in the best.
The VOCMs on 590 & 650 were strong. CFRB was well on top of WINS on 1010.
Other NYC stations that were in, WFAN, WABC, & WBBR. No WCBS--BBC Wales on top on 880.
WBBM & WLS were the 2 Chicago stations I heard--BBM fair, WLS weak & noisy. WJR was strong on 760. CFTR good on 680.
WTAM & KMOX were weak & noisy. A UK station was on 1050 over CHUM. Did not get the location.

This was between 0440 & 0505 GMT.

I think your UK station covering up CHUM might be London, IIRC the London Dial correctly. I know 1050 is an "in between" channel for Europe, but I seem to recall a London local right around there....although not as strong as the blowtorch next door on 1089 (sports).

Thanks--I was wondering what it could be since I've never heard it before. I used to hear CHUM or WEPN. Last night many European stations seemed to be more prevalent on some frequencies.

Very strange conditions tonight on Transatlantic MW DX. Most of the Canadians were coming in well, especially CFTR, but most of the US blowtorches were absent. Even usually reliable WBBR on 1130 wasn't there when I checked around 0700 GMT.

Try listening around my sunrise time. You all seem to be listening too early for the real DX out to the West Coast. Just after SR the loud Europeans have almost dropped out, leaving a pretty clear band still with TADX conditions.
KOMO 1000 has been coming through the last couple of days.
Trying listening away from the common US/CAN stuff and dig deeper for the REAL DX, "it's out there" !!

For 16 Jan 2013
At 55.1875N / 6.625W
-----------------------
Sunrise / Sunset UTC
-----------------------
Twilight starts: 08.00
Sunrise: 08.43
Sunset: 16.28
Twilight ends: 17.11
-----------------------
(From RWW)

So from the above table try from just before 0800z untill at least 0930z

Regards

WOW--KOMO, now that's one I'm going to go for. Thanks Alan!

Speaking of west coast DX at Alan's local sunrise…

On Oct 30, 2012 at ~1am PDT (or is it PST? Does the board correctly reflect times when you're looking at a post made when DST was active and it currently is not DST) I heard XEPE Tijuana, Baja on Alan's node, matching with OTA audio on my Tecsun PL-398mp sitting next to me. What clinched it for me was hearing a Mexico-targetted PSA, although other programming matched too.
I'm wondering when this was relative to your sunrise, Alan?

Also a few nights ago I was listening at somewhere between 11pm and 1am PST… and heard absolutely *NO* TAs. There were a few locals scattered through the dial, but most were weak, even moderately-powered (by USA standards) stations within about 200 km or so. Even a station on the island (or whatever) to the west with a saltwater path wasn't all that strong. I forget freq or power now, but it was one that if i'd been listening on a semi-decent pocket radio with its built-in ferrite antenna (Sony SRF-59, SRF-M37W, Sangean DT-400W, etc) it would very likely have been a fairly good signal. Also 909 (BBC?) was little more than a carrier. It seemed as if I was listening to a mediocre pocket portable with a tiny ferrite antenna, not a comm RX with a beverage or large (several meter) loop or whatever the node is using. Is it possible the node was online with the antenna disconnected or something?

Hi,

Blushes , sorry it was my fault.
Unplugged pre-amp PSU to free up a socket for the soldering iorn, forgot
to plug it back in... Eeeeeeeek

Alan

^ Alan, I hope to get my home PC back by Friday or the weekend.

I had GlobalTuners issues, but last I checked, I notice it worked fine.
