Took a fast trip on the Arctic receiver tonight. Lots of Alaskan stations. 660,820 and 1170 from Fairbanks all very good. Heard KSL & WYLL fighting it out on 1160. Same on 780 with KNOM and WBBM. KOMO was like a local-very strong. Also heard 800 from Juneau.

I got on the Arctic SDR last night. No TA DX that I could identify. Once again lots from Europe, Asia, and even North Africa.

Then I went to the Kaneohe, Hawaii SDR around 10pm CST (0400GMT), which was just after sunset there. The usual west coast mainland visitors were starting to roll in. But the big surprise was CFAC all alone and positively ID'ed on 960. "Alberta Hockey" stuff. I also heard what I think was CBR on 1010, but no positive ID.

Nice catch of CFAC on the Hawaii SDR. I also checked out the Arctic SDR late last night and conditions were bad to North America. Even KOMO which is usually strong was barely heard. The night before on the Arctic receiver I heard KGO and KNX.

Tonight the Arctic receiver was open towards North America. Especially Alaska and the Pacific NW.
I snagged 720 KOTZ Kotzbue, Ak with a very strong signal playing 60s oldies. KGO was battling with another station on 810. KNOM was in on both the Arctic and Hawaii receivers. In fact it was practically even between KNOM and KKOH on 780 on the Hawaii SDR. KOMO again was very strong on the Arctic receiver.
All this took place around 0600Z.

I got on the Arctic receiver about 11pm PT. Many Alaskans in, including Christmas music on 620, KGTL Homer. A Fox Sports station went into local TOH with no ID on 1460 - probably KXNO Des Moines. Another Fox Sports on 1430, likely WENE Endicott NY. 1420 had KITI Chehalis WA mixing with Coast to Coast (presumed KTOE) and another with the Hawaii football game, KKEA Honolulu? Or another ESPN?
630 had a Religious station, not very strong but there. Probably KCIS.

The Arctic receiver was heavy with Alaskans again. In fact I heard KJNP on 1170, and the Seattle stations were strong especially KOMO which sounds like a local. WBBM was coming in well at 0700Z. It alternates mostly with KNOM. On the Hawaiian receiver I've noticed the mainland signals are not as strong as last year, however, the Alaskans are doing well. Hearing KNOM well on Hawaii and on the Arctic receiver.

Daytime skywave season for sure...

I was on the St. Paul Alberta SDR around noon CST today (12/19) hearing KQDE on 1340 from Evergreen MT. Weak, but listenable for about 20 minutes before it disappeared. From what I can determine that's about a 500 mile hop.

Of course KQDE's "neighbor" KOFI/1180, was also in with a very good signal, and I was also hearing news and traffic on CKWX/1130.

Saint Paul is near Edmondton in Central Alberta.

Nice!

A couple years ago I heard KRJW-1240 Altamont OR on that Alberta SDR, just after sunrise. Something like 900 miles away on a graveyard!

I'm listening to the San Jose SDR and on 1070 there's another station in the background of KNX sometimes getting almost as strong.

Huh?

Even here in Hawaii, KNX stands all alone at night.

I'm wondering if that would be CFAX. Could you hear what kind of format they were?

For the few minutes I was listening, it sounded more like light hearted entertainment talk than news talk but maybe it was CFAX in a commercial break?

I wouldn't have thought CFAX would send much of a signal in that direction because of KNX.

I wouldn't think so either, but I'm wondering who else it could be?

That was my first visit to that receiver. I've been on another one in Alberta that was also pretty good, IMHO. But I'm anxious to give the St. Paul rig "a few more spins"

A few nuggets from last night (1/1/20),,,,

I was on the Westfjord, Iceland SDR around 8:30 (CST) 0230 (GMT).....

A couple of surprising catches. First was WSSP, Milwaukee, on 1250. All of the Chicago blowtorches were absent, as were the two other most likely big signals from Milwaukee (WTMJ and WISN). So then comes 5kw WSSP comfortably on top of the channel. Sports talk interrupted by "Van Horn Auto Group" spot. (Milwaukee area auto dealer). Later I was hearing KCJJ on 1630. Perhaps not all that surprising since they've turned up multiple times on the Norway arctic SDR.

Others of note last night... CKAC, WHAS, WBZ (apparently the null misses Iceland), WCKY. As would be expected, the band was dominated by European stations. Probably more from the UK any other European country. BBC on 693 and 810 (Scotland), along with Sports Talk 1089 were all blasting.
