Online radio stations are any making money?

As someone who been involved in both Fm and online radio over past can I pise the question is there any station making money or breaking even .

Regardless of what genre you do it a major uphill battle.

Some have tried the ads to generate some funds but it's peanuts more have tried local sponcership.

Both are big sell.

What do you think if you are involved on air in online radio or better still own station what are your views.

Appreciate any feedback .

Like most things radio...over the air or streaming....the biggest issue by far is not quality of programming...it’s WHERE listeners live and an enormous lack of experienced sales people.

Unless a streaming station can attract a decent sized local audience, good luck getting any local business to buy advertising.

Even having a half-million worldwide cume listeners spread out over 150 different countries means almost zero to world wide brands....and even less to local businesses.

Micro-target your programming to appeal to a local audience who reside in the local zip code clusters of businesses you want to sell advertising to. Businesses advertise to help drive potential customers residing in their trading area into their stores.

Hope that helps. I was on air about 15 years, then spent my last 29 years in local radio advertising sales & sales management.

Doesn't matter how good your programming is. The ever-increasing licensing fees make it almost unsustainable. That's why one of the main reasons SXM bought Pandora. SXM could leverage their music licensing fees as a satellite broadcaster to bring the cost of doing streaming down. Had they not, Pandora probably would have gone under.
