Only cable can...

Go out in a thunderstorm.

Right now - light drizzle after a thunderstorm.

My DirecTV went out twice - once for about 30 seconds, once for about 4 minutes.

Comcast RIGHT NOW:
WCBS - "searching for signal" on a black screen
KYW - noisy picture with snow
WNBC - "searching for signal" on a black screen
WNYW - "searching for signal" on a black screen
WPVI - intermittent sound & rolling lines
WABC - "searching for signal" on a black screen
WWOR - "searching for signal" on a black screen
WCAU - fine
WPIX - "searching for signal" on a black screen
WHYY - fine
WNET - "searching for signal" on a black screen

Comcast has been exactly the same for over 20 minutes now.

Let's be fair now. You're obviously getting a feed from the cable company's headend. The problem is in the reception of the off-air stations by the cable company. There are three main ways I'm aware of to get a broadcast station on either cable or satellite; directly off-air, by microwave feed or by fiber feed. The satellite companies have the exact same options for local stations. They have to get the feeds up to the birds somehow.

Cable shoots itself in the foot on a fairly regular basis, but the comparison is faulty.

Here in the Hudson Valley with Time Warner I've notice ever since they upgraded to the digital technology (about 4 years ago) the cable rarely ever goes out these days. Back when they were using the old technology it used to go out in EVERY thunderstorm or when the wind was blowing heavy.

Perhaps the issue is with COMCAST in particular

I say this, because my cable was first Prime Cable. This was sold and became part of TCI Cable, which was sold and became part of AT&T Cable. NEVER not ONE single time did I have an interruption in service or problem with billing or anything.

Then came Comcast. EVERYTIME it rained, half the channels went out. The customer service was awful, it was such a burden I got rid of my cable all together. I remember when I cancelled their attitude was OK, when can you bring the box in.

Not we'll come get it. Not is there a reason you're cancelling. Not "Gee, we're sorry to lose you as a $70/month paying customer.

More like we don't care.

I think there is something wrong with Comcast all the way around<P ID="signature">______________

I think that part of the problem is that they are a Philadelphia company, and people and institutions from their tend to have an inferiority complex and an attitude problem. Comca$t is a company you hope to see bad things happen to. If they do an Enron, there will be great rejoicing.

I have comcast in Atlanta and everything works well, They get 165 out of me for internet and digital cable plus DVR. Even when I just had the 40 dollar basic they were fine for me.

I've had terrible experiences with Cablevision. Not in New York, but in their former Framingham, MA system (then sold to AT&T, now Comcast), the cable would go out at least once or twice a week. It didn't matter if it was raining or not, the cable was off for a total of two days ever month. And when I called to complain, they wouldn't even give credit for the two days, and claimed that it wasn't broken.

Another time, Cablevision was shutting off a neighbors' cable, but shut off mine instead. Again, their customer service was terrible, took them a week to get out here. I don't recall them ever apoligizing for the incident either.

They ended up selling the system to AT&T, who'd owned most of the systems around here from the MediaOne merger. Then, not 6 months later, AT&T Cable (known around here as AT&T Broadband) sold it self to Comcast. AT&T had planned to rebuild the Framingham system, but pretty much changed nothing and didn't really care about any of their systems, as they had bought the systems only to offer telephone service over them. While parts of Framingham were rebuilt by AT&T, it was Comcast that finished the rebuild and got credit for it.

Not long after the Comcast merger was announced, I flipped to RCN and have had little problems since. Although oddly, whenever it is windy out, I lose my cable internet but not the TV. Cablevision/AT&T/Comcast has lost so many customers because of their negligence, a story in the Boston Globe in 2002 noted that 33% of Framingham customers have RCN, although RCN did not operate in Framingham until 1999 or 2000. 37% of customers in Lexington, MA have RCN over Comcast. The Town of Framingham has denied renewal of Comcast's cable license, and so I don't know what they're going to do next. Unfortunately, most of the rest of the country does not have such competition.

It could be a local problem with Comcast. Knowing that many of the issues came after US West bought Continental Cablevision (naming it Media One later), and AT&T buying TCI, Prime, and some of the Cablevision outlets.

Locally, my only complain is that Comcast charges nearly $50 for basic cable (Springfield, MA). Their customer service is decent, and their internet service is very reliable.....

..........Plus they gave me my WAPA America LOL. :p

...My cable company gives me a Canadian TV channel(CBC).

DirectTV & Dish can't do that.
