I've been watching what all the Atlanta stations and clusters have been doing for Hurricane Relief and the final station in the market to step up is 99X. Something finally showed up on their website today (late Saturday night)! Come on! There is a little responsibility radio has to public service (maybe I'm just old fasion), I think it is embarrassing that 99X management we be so slow to lend a hand to this enormous effort. Even sister station Q100 was raising money by the middle of the week. Star 94, Kicks, Eagle, Dave and the entire Clear Channel and Cox Clusters were pretty responsive in their relief efforts. I say kudos to those stations and I think 99X should rethink their priorities if it takes almost a full week to recognize the importance of this story to everyone. I expected more from a station that prides itself in being "live and local". They might as well have been voice tracked all week.

there, I've vented...

Number one: Why would you criticise any entity that is helping out during this tragedy? Whether they jumped on board yesterday or tomorrow is irrelevant. Now let's get the facts straight. 99X's introductory fundraiser for the Red Cross Hurricane Relief was finalized before Katrina ever struck. Obviously you haven't been listening to the station or you would realize that imaging for the Park Tavern "Corporate Challenge", with music from the wildly successful "Dave Matthews Cover Band" and more, has been running since Tuesday. Our efforts may not be as noticable as others who have television affiliates in their clusters, but that is not the goal of this endeavor. 99X, Q100, Star 94, Dave FM, V103, 11Alive, etc. are not doing this for exposure or brownie points in the community. We are doing it because we have a voice and a responsibility.

This Tuesday 99X will announce an array of fundraising and awareness campaigns. I hope you will take a moment to listen and perhaps be enlightened to ways in which you may be able to assist in this crisis.

Ummmm, in answer to "number one"....Welcome to the board, that's what we do. This is a forum to compliment radio exellence and critique when radio can do better. Just 'casue there's a tragedy, doesn't mean your station is exempt from being scrutinized by your listeners. I'm very impressed with most of the radio efforts in Atlanta, even including the attention given by your sister station. Funny that 99X's plans were so solid before the Hurricane that on Fred Toucher's website this week he told listeners the station wasn't even planning on doing fundraising. Maybe I haven't listened enough, but I hafta think that if the morning show hosts didn't even know about fundraising efforts, 99X didn't do a very good job of communicating with listeners either. 99X also didn't feel that the tradgedy was a big enough priority to place it on the front page until today of the website like every other radio and television station in Atlanta.

I certainly will check out the announcements on Tuesday, but not for ideas on how I can contribute. I've made my contributions, I didn't think I needed to wait over a week to get involved. This tradegy demands urgency.

Respectfully, 99X could have done better. The rest of the broadcast community has.

As far as facts, none of the stations you mentioned have TV in their cluster, only Cox has a TV statio. Everyone else's efforts were noticable, because everyone else made it a major priority. True, this isn't for brownie points, but if you don't get exposure for your efforts, then they won't be as effective. Of course exposure is important.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate the ideas.

This is very sad. Evidently you are critiquing websites and not actual broacasts. If you have any doubts as to 99X's commitment to our Atlanta community I invite you to view our public file during regular office hours. Let me also add that because of our dedication to this city and the efforts of its citizens 99X was one of only 50 stations in the country nominated for the 2005 NAB Crystal Awards. WSB AM was the only other Atlanta station nominated and sadly neither of us won, but it was truly an honor to be nominated.

May as well clarify what Matt meant by radio stations working with TV stations-- even though Cox is the only one that has both radio & TV properties here, several other radio stations such as Star 94, Dave FM and V-103, hooked up with TV stations in Atlanta to do fundraisers. That's what Matt meant.

Again, thanks for the response, I know it is rare for broadcast professionals to post on this board. I never took issue with 99X's history as a radio station. I don't see how that is relevant to how 99X has reacted to this crisis. Getting a nomination from the NAB doesn't give you a free pass not to be compared to how the rest of the market responded. I don't even understand the relevance of that to my original post. I felt 99X's first week response was unimpressive compared with your fellow broadcasters...that's what is sad. I'm not surprised that a station employee would take issue with my critque, but we obviously disagree. I've said my piece, thanks.

I think the real dog in this case is on the TV side with UPN Atlanta still listing absolutely nothing about Katrina or any relief efforts on their website. It makes me doubt they really care about this disater. Maybe I should've posted on the TV board, but at least 99 got there.

Didnt 99X announce a fundraiser early on in the week?? Pretty sure they are auctioning off a trip to San Deigo to surf with Switchfoot.

What's sad is that this is "turkey's" own personal problem with 99X. If you look at his past posts they mostly all deal with 99X and negative comments against them. So this really isn't about criticizing when radio can be better - it's about specifically criticizing 99X. I give Matt Jones a lot of credit for posting a reponse. Late, not late or just differences in the support effort - NO ONE should be singlesd out - unless they actually are DOING NOTHING!!

It's all based on circumstance, relationships, partnerships, man power etc... for ANY organization to scramble for relief efforts.

Do you think if CC wasn't such a huge company, a station like the Buzz would be able to do ANYTHING on their own - answer is NO. But they are because of CC - and that's a GREAT thing.

Don't dwell on response time and how big an event is - go do your part. You didn't post this thread to call attention to what's being done among area radio stations - you did it hoping people would jump on your band-wagon of hate against 99X - spend your time more wisely - like helping the victims of this horrific event.
